Interesting fact: Did you know that according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, women born in 2009 can expect to live to be almost 84 years old while men can expect to live to be 79 years old?
Although it may sound like a long time, research shows that for most people, these last years are often suffering from serious illness, disease or disability. This means that many of us will end up tortuously enduring many different types of diseases, popping pills, undergoing surgery, taking medication, etc., instead of enjoying and living our years to the full.

1. Count your alcohol consumption: Alcohol is not only full of kilojoules, it can increase your risk of developing chronic diseases and drinking too much is simply bad for your body. At a minimum, have at least one or two alcohol-free days each week and no more than 2 standard drinks per day. If you can’t put down that Smirnoff or bottle of beer, try swapping it for a healthy glass of red wine. Red wine is rich in antioxidants and actually good for your heart and kidneys. But don’t go skulling a whole bottle of wine though, moderation is the key.
2. Quit smoking: Smoking affects your cholesterol levels, damages your blood vessels, hardens your arteries, stains your teeth, causes bad breath, reduces female fertility, causes lung cancer, lung disease, dry skin, earlier and increases the risk of cervix cancer and a heart attack. Enough said?
3. Do regular checkups: Getting regular checkups will reduce your chances of having any health-related surprises. It also allows your doctor to identify any serious illness/diseases in the early stages which will increase the chances of curing it. As a minimum (that is, if you are generally healthy and well), get a blood test every 2 years or so to make sure your cholesterol and blood sugar are at normal levels.
4. Eat healthy: Think about this analogy: If you have a car and you use crap gasoline, will your car continue to run smoothly and efficiently over a long period of time? No. Well, it’s exactly the same with your body; junk food and the results will reflect on your body as a whole. Get into a healthy eating habit/routine and feel the difference!

Try to stay away from any caffeinated drinks (ie coke, coffee, Redbull) after 7pm to help your body settle into a regular sleep pattern. Having said that, it is also not good to sleep too much because your body and mind can wake up feeling even more lethargic. 7-9 hours of sleep is the maximum amount of sleep for most people, so set the alarm, grab your pillow and hit the sack!
8. Love yourself and love others: Human beings are social creatures and it is important that we continue to communicate, connect, and engage with others. Stay close to your friends and family and make a serious effort to keep in touch with them. Love your friends and family, love yourself and love what you are doing with your life. Be a giver, not a taker and feel the love and appreciation of others around you. Love really can make the world go round!
9. Live a balanced life: I know it’s hard to try and find time to do everything that’s important to you, but it’s important to try. The best thing to achieve this is to get organized and work on what your goals are and what you want to achieve.
10. Know yourself and take corrective action: If you know you are a workaholic, get a diary, find a hobby and make time for yourself and to enjoy yourself.
