Beating Obesity Into Submission
Why can’t we tackle the problem of obesity in this country. It’s not just us. America, Mexico, New Zealand, Hungary and Australia are equal or behind the UK in the fight against obesity. Obesity and the diseases it causes are well documented on television and online. Why the message did not arrive. The information is there.
The shift in fast food culture has had a major impact on our eating habits. 30 to 40 years ago, fast food was only accessible in fish and chip shops. McDonald’s was just starting out in the UK then.
‘Apps’ like ‘Hungary House’ make it so easy to order food. One click of the button on your mobile, and you’re done. You only have to make the effort to get off the sofa and walk through the front door. Work so hard!
Eating habits are the key to healthy diet. It starts from the day you are born. What foods your parents introduce to you set your eating habits for life. If you have a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and meat early, you get used to it. Going the other way, if you are introduced to a lot of sugary sweet foods at a young age, this becomes your norm. Sugar, of course there are added attractions for children. The sugar rush and the sweet taste are too hard to resist. Food markets know this and go out of their way to tempt everyone, especially children. Sweets are always near the cash register, at a height where it is right under the noses of the youth.
What can be done?
We are creatures of habit. It is in our nature. Changing addictive habits like sugar or smoking is not easy to do. Advertisements focusing on the harmful effects of smoking change people’s perspectives. Stark’s photo of blood clots from the end of a cigarette brought the unhealthy effects home.
This type of advertising applied to high sugar and salt consumption could be powerful… but it must be a sustained campaign. The campaign against smoking has continued for more than 20 years. The ‘truth’ campaign aimed at eliminating youth smoking in the United States began in 1999. The youth smoking rate was 23% at that time. In 2016 the number dropped to 6%.
The government needs to invest in anti-sugar campaigns. The NHS faces increasing pressure to deal with patients with food-related illnesses.
With the constant increase in population, the next 50 years could be a healthcare nightmare. It could be avoided, but only with the will to do something about it.
Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, cancer, depression and anxiety. People who are severely obese are three times more likely to need social care than people of normal weight. This includes hospitalization and associated health and social care costs.
The NHS estimated the cost of obesity for 2006/7 to be £5.1 billion. The costs account for obesity medications, increased use of bariatric surgery and new equipment to accommodate larger populations.
Education is key
My son is a personal trainer. He runs what are called ‘Weight Shift Classes’. It’s interesting what he said about his experience giving these courses.
He says “We like to keep a variety of exercises to keep the interest there. One week, it will be pull ups and press ups, shoulder press and leg press exercises. The next week is more cardio based and some free weights like dumb bells and Kettle Bells. Another week could be Kettle Bells and TRX in a circuit training format. It’s still based on weight, but you keep the intensity up and keep the heart rate high.
He says about diet, “I really try to educate them about how sugar is bad, and too much ‘carby’ food.. in a lot of pasta, rice, chocolate sweets, carbonated drinks. The number one reason for obesity is sugar. don’t control and measure what they eat, but give them an understanding of what they put into their bodies. Whether they change their diet or not is up to them. I’m just planting seeds in their minds, giving them the knowledge they need. So they have a choice either follow it or not”.
Do you measure weight loss?
Yes, we weigh regularly. Typically, the customers who see improvement are the ones who stick with the program. I have had clients who listened to my advice and saw good results. At the same time I gave advice to other clients, and they found it more difficult to maintain.
How long does it take to lose weight?
Some clients lose up to 2 pounds per week. Some may even lose 4-5 pounds per week.
A basic target of 2 pounds per week over a period of 3-4 months is a great loss. About 1¾ stone.
Do you look at their fat percentage?
Yes, very important to look at the percentage of fat, not just losing body weight. If you weigh 60 kilograms, you have to ask the question, 60 kilograms ago? You can break this down into body fat, muscle mass, bone density, and water retention. We can measure all that, so you actually see all the parts that make up all the body weight. So we focus more on body fat, because you could lose muscle mass. That would be unhealthy. That’s why we focus on weight training to maintain muscle mass.. and encourage high protein consumption to maintain muscle mass.
So after say 6 months, surely your customers should be able to go out on their own without your assistance?
Sure, 6 months down the line, you would learn a lot, experiment with different exercises, record the exercises, so you have to follow them. Over 6 months you would do these exercises many times, it would be like a second nature..So after a long time you don’t need baby anymore, you know what to do, you can go out on your own. , so it’s a kind of lesson for life.
So you do not encourage people to starve themselves to lose weight?
“Oh no, starving yourself is like a quick fix but it’s very damaging to the body. You have to look at food like it’s fuel. It’s like putting wood on a fire. It will keep fuel without you burning. The fire burns. , your metabolism is dead. Keep the metabolism high and you will burn calories all day. Look at body builders, they will always burn calories, but they are never hungry, but they hardly have any body fat”.
To keep weight off is something that takes dedication, self-determination and self-discipline.
With a little help from informed professionals, it is very possible. It takes self-drive to achieve weight loss goals. Today there is a lot of help from places like YouTube and articles online. You never have to feel like you are alone with weight loss. To keep healthy in old age is worth it. We are much happier. We have never been so informed about health as we are today. There should be less obesity than 30 years ago, not more!
