As the father of a 2-year-old girl, I know the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. Everyone in the family functions better when your child sleeps through the night.
After struggling with our daughter for 2 years to get her to sleep through the night, Louise and I decided it was time to make a change. The typical night for us went something like this: rock it to sleep, carefully put it in the crib, tip-toe out of the room and slowly close the door. Some nights he would sleep through the night, but most nights would result in one or two awakenings where the whole process would need to be repeated. This had to do for the afternoon nap as well.

Your baby should be put to bed awake. Now if you’re just starting the process then it will probably cry and cry and cry. You can walk into the room and pat him on the back to calm him down, but it should be a very short visit just to let him know you’re close. You should not stay in the room while he is sleeping. If you are there, he cannot learn to sleep alone.
I know a lot of people use music to soothe their babies and help them fall asleep, but unless you plan on playing the music all night, you shouldn’t. Your baby will get used to the music to sleep, so if he wakes up in the night, he will think he needs the music to fall asleep.
This sounds very simple and basic, but it worked wonders for us. Now our precious daughter goes right to sleep at nap time and bedtime and in the past two months has only woken up in the middle of the night once or twice and no rocking was needed, just a little quick tap on the back.
