Acid Reflux In Infants
Acid reflux in infants is a very common condition. This occurs when contents from the stomach back up into the esophagus, possibly because a valve in the stomach does not have an effective seal. The contents of the baby’s stomach are often acidic, and it burns. So it is like baby heartburn. We treat the acid reflux, and it helps with the colic – sometimes – because acid reflux doesn’t always cause colic.
Adults often project their own experiences onto their babies, but babies’ stomachs are very different from those of adults. The acidity of an immature stomach is not nearly comparable to that of an adult. Research has confirmed that many babies have some reflux but it doesn’t bother them. Therefore, most babies do not experience discomfort when they have acid reflux.
Of course, there are some exceptions. Some babies experience reflux pain. In fact, these problems are not necessarily accompanied by vomiting. When the food comes, the babies simply tense their bodies and grimace. Excessive crying can certainly occur with acid reflux, and this condition is sometimes misdiagnosed as colic.
We don’t know why colic is related to some babies but not others. What we do know is that having a baby with acid reflux can put tremendous stress on the family, and this perspective must be addressed as well. It can sometimes be difficult to differentiate between reflux and colic, but there are some helpful clues. The discomfort usually reaches its greatest intensity within an hour after eating. Therefore, babies tend to cry after eating. A baby with true colic is more likely to cry more often at bedtime, and the pattern does not correlate with their feeding schedule.
Reflux in babies can be serious. If you suspect your child may have acid reflux, make an appointment with your pediatrician. The doctor may prescribe a medication or order other diagnostic tests to evaluate the reason for the crying.
