House Training A Dog: Four Steps To Successful Dog Toilet Training

House training a dog does not have to be a long, smelly process. In fact, successful dog toilet training can be done in as little as a couple of days when you do it right.

My springer spaniel, Muggins was only 8-weeks old when we brought him home, but by focusing right away on potty training, we were accident-free in a short time. On the third day he was with us, he walked up to the sliding glass door and knocked on it with his little white paw. I opened the door, and trotted out onto the lawn and crouched down. That’s how easy potty training a dog can be.

My current springer, Ducky, learned to go out the dog door and in his back yard to do his thing in the same amount of time. We were accident free in just a few days.

Dog toilet training has nothing to do with toileting. It also has nothing to do with rubbing a dog’s nose in urine or feces, either, as old school dog training suggests. Dog toilet training can be accomplished in four easy steps:

1. Easy puppy house training requires you to throw light on your dog as much as possible. Dogs give you signs when they need to pee or poop. They may pant or complain. They can start sniffing around intensely. Watching your dog carefully not only prevents accidents, it is the first step to teach good potty habits.

2. Always take your puppy outside after mealtime and every half hour (for puppies) to every hour (for adult dogs). Many dogs relieve themselves immediately after eating. Taking advantage of this is a good training strategy. Taking your dog out regularly reduces the chance of accidents. You take your dog outside when you are very if your dog needs to go. Your dog does his thing, then you apply step 3.

3. If you want quick results, you need to pour on the praise. Praise your dog profusely every time he urinates or poops outside. I mean go crazy with praise. This is not the time for decoration. If you want a house without urine and feces, you need to clap your hands and squeal, “What a good pee.” (Hint: you don’t have to call it pee. Dogs don’t care what you call it. We say to Ducky, “A couple of squats.”) You can also include treats as a form of praise. Use small, healthy treats, and you can give your dog or puppy a treat every time he or she poops outside.

4. Training crates can help you with step 4 of the training process. Limit your new pet until you are sure that your training efforts have been successful. Leaving your dog in a crate, for example, when you leave the house is a good way to limit the chance of minor accidents. Dogs do not like the “dense” mess, and the crate, for your dog, is his hole. When you are home and the dog is out of the crate, restrict your dog or puppy to whatever room you are in. This helps you do step 1, watch your dog.
