3 Tips For Getting Your Baby to Sleep Through the Night
Having trouble getting your baby to sleep through the night is very common. In fact this is due to our problems with having to listen to our babies cry, rather than the child’s problems with sleep.
When your baby is born, there is an instant bond and urge to protect them at all costs. We, as mothers, see crying as a sign that the baby needs something, which is true, so when the baby cries we rush to them to ‘fix’ their needs. The problem is that when they are tired and we go to them fussing we actually prevent them from getting the sleep that they need.
So first you need to reprogram yourself as a mother to give your baby the sleep he needs and that means letting them cry a little.
So, having said all that, here are our top 3 tips to ensure your baby sleeps through the night…
1) Keep a routine – put your baby down in the same place and keep the same routine, like in what you do and what you say ie good night, sleep well, see you soon etc…
2) Provide them with things that they can use as their ‘safety blanket’ – children usually choose their own safety blanket/muslin/teddy, but we can help them along by putting something in their bed that is always there. I used a muslin because it was easy to replace and easy to carry around, but you can use whatever feels best or nicest, as long as it is safe for baby. Make this part of the routine, give them the teddy or whatever you chose. (Always try to change these items every now and then so that you are not in trouble if it is lost or damaged)
3) don’t worry about the noise outside the rooms/sleeping area – keeping the noise down when a baby is sleeping is not good because if then there is a noise the baby may wake up with a start and may even become scared So theoretically you should be able to hoover outside the baby’s door without waking them. This means that not only can you get on with your life when your baby has gone to sleep, but you also don’t have to worry about other kids making noise or having friends and family over.
Remember that newborns need frequent feedings and sleeping through the night may not be possible until the baby is three months old or later. Some babies only start sleeping through the night at one year. Once your baby no longer wakes for a feed, these three tips will ensure both you and your baby a restful night. These tips will work however to get your baby to sleep at night even before they are ready to go all night without food. They should wake up for a meal, repeat these three steps when finished and should go straight back.
