How To Organize Now For More Summer Fun Later

It’s like a gorgeous spring day I wash my car. I’m going to wonder where I am now that I don’t have to look out of windows covered in gunk smeared with tire spray on the windows and rearview mirrors. I was out cleaning the windows and while I was washing the windows the birds nearby were chattering. Ahh, it’s so good to hear the birds again.

This must mean spring is here which means there is some spring organizing that needs to be done. I have a small table on my front porch and I was changing the quilt on it. I looked around and realized that there are definitely places that need some touch up paint. There is ugly green carpet on the front porch and this is the year I will replace it.

1. Check your home and see what maintenance needs to be done, check to see if you need to get rid of clutter. It can be as easy as sweeping the cobwebs from the corners on your porch or near the ceilings in your bedroom.

2. Install the screens you took off your windows last fall. While you’re at it wash the windows. Clean gutters and downspouts. April rain brings May flowers and you want that water to have a place to go.

3. Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. This is a good time to change the AC furnace and filter. I was teaching a class the other night on organizing at the community school and a woman said she hates moving anything to a better place because when she goes to it she thinks of the old place instead of the new place she moved to. it’s . I know this happens to me too.

4. When you make a home for an item think ahead where you will use the item and think of the most logical place for it. Take a moment and work it out in your mind. If it’s something you don’t use very often make a list and keep it in your planner where you put certain items. Or tape the list to the inside of the closet door.

5. Keep like items together. This does not mean only having your frequently used items in one room. (Things like scissors, tape, paper etc). Make room for these things in as much room as you use them. Always put them back in the same place after use.

6. Is decluttering a daunting task for you because you feel like you have so much to do? Set a timer for 15 to 20 minutes. When it dings stop, walk away, go get a drink. Give yourself permission to stop at the end of this time or depending on your energy to continue organizing for another 15-20 minutes. The biggest thing is not to continue working until you burn out and will never want to return to the work at hand.

7. Every few months our neighborhood has a food drive for the local food pantry. What a wonderful opportunity to go through your pantry and feed your family not eating but still good. Keep a basket on your pantry shelf just for treats. This way you will always have a designated place even when the treats go and before you make it to the store.

8. Put on the winter sports gear and get out of your summer gear. By taking inventory now you will know what still fits and if you need to restock before the first big party out.

Get rid of clutter by starting now before summer is here when you will want to do nothing but play and have fun.
