How to Build a Rope Swing at the Lake Without a Tree

A day at the lake

Entertaining the kids can be as simple as entertaining yourself and letting them hang with you. Children don’t have our resources, or our abilities, but they have great imaginations. If you simply combine the ideas, skills and money of everyone, who knows what you can come up with. One day camping at Timothy Lake, my son said let’s build a rope swing to swing outside on the water. I thought, great all you need is a long rope and a tree leaning on deep water and you got it. (Travel itinerary, tips, discounts, articles, can be read in TripTalkusa) The code was no problem since I was in the habit of bringing everything including the kitchen sink with us camping. The leaning tree posed a problem because the lake has no leaning trees. We took our 12 foot aluminum boat across the lake to find a tree we could bring back. In this discreet cloak and dagger mission there was an adult (questionable) an 8 year old and a 5 year old, a tippy Sears and Roebucks rowboat with a 2hp outboard, a small survival razor sharp hand and a bundle or rope with thread.

We crossed the lake in an area I thought there would be no one, (because I was not sure what I had in mind was approved) went to the shore in the woods and found a tree that was very tall and thin. I picked a tree about 3-4 inches in diameter and cut it down, except it wouldn’t fall because all the trees around it were preventing gravity from doing its job. Finally, after a lot of pushing and shoving my accomplices and I were able to find three beautiful limbless poles clean at the edge of the water. We prepared the skiff to become a tug boat and slide our boat into the logs in the lake only to discover that we had cut the Hemlock Tree and did not float. There we were with three good twenty feet all tied to a wooden boat sitting on the bottom of the lake.

Even though this looked like the end of the caper it wasn’t. Our little 2 hp was able to pull the boat, and as long as we kept moving forward the boat stayed close to the surface. When we slowed down it would flow and hang from our tow rope. This actually worked to our advantage because no one could see what we were doing, and if caught or questioned, I would simply drop the line and let our contraband sink into its watery grave. The trip across the lake dragging submerged trees with a 2hp engine seemed to take forever, and I was sure they were watching us. When we approached our water cane, we ran the boat right to shore and our illegal cargo settled on the bottom in 18 inches of water. So far well, no one knows anything, we simply find logs on the shore. That is my story. Just don’t talk to my kids, they have wild imaginations and tell crazy stories. After letting the dust settle, the boys and I arranged our three poles (still in the water) in the shape of a big letter A. Then, using a lot of thread, we tightly tied three points where the poles cross. It means a third grader with the help of a younger brother tied it together with knots never discovered. We then maneuvered our non-floating wooden frame into deeper water where it was happy to remain submerged. The final step was to tie a rope to the top end of the A-frame and bring it ashore to a secure anchor tree. Then we lift the top of the A-frame up out of the water and tie it off leaving the A-frame standing at an angle with a short piece of rope hanging from the top. Now the children could stand on the cross A and swing out. The rope swing proved a great success and the children played all week. The poles were not strong enough for the weight of an adult and would bend when I hung on the rope. When we broke camp to go home later in the week we towed the poles to a ten foot deep spot and sunk them into the bottom planning to retrieve them and resurrect the A-frame next summer.
