8 Great Tips to Help If Your Baby Won’t Sleep
If you feel that your baby will not sleep to the point where you feel that something is wrong, here are some good tips to consider:
- Are you meeting your baby’s physical needs? Before you put your baby to sleep, make sure your baby is well fed and dry and has a comfortable temperature. Newborn babies are not very good at regulating their own temperature, so you should be careful not to overheat them. Use your common sense and if the room is a comfortable temperature, do not wrap your baby in several layers of bedding.
- In the first three months, it will help your baby to establish his biological clock if you can expose your baby to natural light during the day and less artificial light in the evening or night.
- There is a window of opportunity when it is an ideal time to put your baby to sleep. If your baby is overtired, your baby will be more likely to sleep poorly and usually won’t sleep as long. Try and get used to observing your baby’s tired signals. This may include yawning, rubbing eyes, purring and arching.
- Make sure you don’t overstimulate your baby just before bedtime.
- Try to develop a consistent bedtime routine. Studies show that a well-developed bedtime routine increases the quality and duration of sleep. The routine does not need to be long but should provide consistent cues for sleep. These should be taken into consideration, location, sound, smell and lighting.
- Your baby may become dependent on external help to fall asleep. This can be a pacifier (dummy), driving around the block, being breastfed to sleep or other similar sleep accessories. Unless you can still provide that external help, you should withdraw it.
- If your baby falls asleep well but can’t go back to sleep without assistance if he wakes up in the middle of the night, then you will need to teach your baby to self-soothe. This does NOT mean that you MUST use “Cry It Out” style techniques.
- Finally, if you hear him during the night, don’t run to him right away. But I’m not suggesting that you ignore your baby’s cries of distress. Just try and wait for a couple of minutes if you can.
