4 First Aid Procedures For Dogs That Every Pet Owner Should Know
Initial training for your dog is important. Although it does not change the expertise of your veterinarian, there are times when emergency procedures must be performed at home until assistance is available. Dogs can suffer from dehydration, food poisoning or stroke at home and should be attended to immediately. These emergency skills are especially helpful when a veterinarian is not available.
Here are 4 ways to help a dog first that you should learn:
For Choking
If you see your pet coughing, you should come to his aid immediately. Loud noises, difficulty breathing and a blue color on his lips or tongue are all signs that his airway is blocked. Always be careful when looking after your pet in this situation – it may be afraid and more inclined to bite. Call your veterinarian immediately or have someone call. Get your dog breathing if he still can’t breathe then look in his mouth to see if there is a foreign object. If the object is visible, try to remove it with pliers or tweezers carefully. Try not to push it further. If it doesn’t reach, drive to your vet. If your dog collapses, put him on his side and use your palm, hit his cage firmly 3 to 4 times. Do this until you reach your vet.
For seizures
If your dog has a seizure, don’t restrain him. During the seizure, speak to him in a firm and strong voice. When the seizure is over, keep your pet warm and rest, then call your veterinarian.
For Disease Prevention
Signs that your dog has been poisoned include pawing at his nose, red eyes and hissing. If you notice these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately. Check the packaging of the product and follow the instructions regarding decontamination or rinsing. Keep it away from your pet’s eyes, mouth or nose.
For Poisoning
If you see your dog gagging, vomiting, foaming at the mouth or diarrhea, it is most likely to be poisoned. Contact your veterinarian immediately. Try your best to identify the poison, how much was consumed and how much was passed. Collect a sample of your pet’s vomit and place it in an airtight container for animal testing.
Being equipped with knowledge of first aid procedures for dogs will help you in an emergency!
