Be Careful When Making Fun of Dear Old Dad
The tree you are standing under is mine. The base you just tripped? Maybe it’s my father. It’s amazing how we become the people we say we’ll never be.
“Hey boy! How was your day?” My dad can always sound like he just took a bottle of pep. It is a good thing that has been passed down from one generation to the next. “I’m fine,” I replied. My parents and I talk almost every day and mostly for a reason. They also wonder again and again why the printer is not working with their computer, or they want to know why their computer is not working with their printer. However, I have come to hate Bill Gates.
Our conversation that day was just a “catch up” of what was going on in our lives. I told dad about my latest essay for my public speaking and dad was kind enough to give me his calendar. Dad does what I do but for the church. In other words, my father and I paid for what they used to leave us out of the house for – a lot of talking.
This morning our conversation did not last long. Before hanging up, dad wanted to tell me that he got a call from someone who is going to buy him to do his financial meeting and then we said our goodbyes and hung up . Type of call. One day. So I think.
Near the end of the day, I received a second phone call from my father with my mother listening on their phone. They are usually both on the line when they call. Just before hanging up, dad started telling me again about this person who called and wanted him to attend the meeting. Now, before you think my father has forgotten, let me tell you. He never had one. No but, my father has always been a story repeater, joke repeater, and story repeater, and joke repeater. This is just one story I’m going to listen to, again, or jump in and interrupt the inevitable.
I decided to answer with “You already told my father this.” Usually he says “oh” and we leave it. However, at this time he was sure he didn’t have it. I said yes and started repeating the details of the name, place and situation that he had shared earlier that day. He refused, finally he did with “oh, I guess I should have told you.” I heard mom laughing on the other phone and we all chuckled as our conversation ended.
The next day my daughter, my wife and myself were sitting at our dining table preparing to eat. I started talking to them by telling them about the phone call I had with my father the day before. I laughed as I went to great lengths to explain to my wife and young daughter how Grandpa Jack had told her not to repeat her story when in fact she had. While still in the middle of the fun of my father, my daughter started laughing and interrupted me with the following lines. “Dad, you already told us about your conversation with Grandpa. You told us yesterday.” – True story!
Moral of the Story?
I don’t remember the justice of the story. Ask my daughter.
