How to Prepare for a Kid to Visit (Short Term) When You Don’t Have Kids

There was a time (100 years ago? OK, only eight) when I thought to myself “why can’t she just make her kid behave and not break my stuff?” I feel this way about a good friend. Someone I’ve known for years before they had children. I asked her parenting ideas (in my head, of course). Since having children I know that sometimes there is not much you can do about your children’s behavior and most of the time they are not bad but hungry, tired or too much energy and need a fire power. This article is for childless friends, temporary childless grandparents, new aunts and uncles, and anyone else expecting a short visit from someone. small It is designed to help you “baby proof” your home for little guests and their little hands that want to touch all your little gear and pull Fluffy’s tail.

Infant (birthday-1 year)

Pre-crawling babies are pretty easy to baby-proof. Make sure that you vacuum the room where you are going to have fun to make sure that all the small things and fuzzes are off the floor to limit the yuck the child can put in their mouth. I also like to have a clean blanket to put on the floor so it will be a little warmer, and if the pattern of the blanket is bright or interesting, it will affect the baby. Diaper changes will happen during the visit so planning for that will keep you out of the loop later. Simply placing a towel with a tissue on top (think puppies) on your bed is perfect. A few other good items to have on hand would be a few baby clothes (cheap soft ones) or baby wipes to wipe the face, nose, and hands. For babies close to one year old, rice puffs (or rusks) and applesauce are good snacks.

I also made sure my dogs were put down. Even in the garden, garage or basement. My dogs love children. There’s nothing like a 110 pound German Shepherd laying on a blanket next to a baby slicking the baby’s hair back with a dog chip. Although this sight warms my heart, it has caused nausea in a few of my girlfriends (I love my dogs). I know my dogs wouldn’t intentionally hurt children, but none of my friends (except S) feel the way I do for dogs. Even your most dog-loving friends can have a different reaction when a baby deer enters their lives. The best way to avoid stress is to keep the dogs out of the mix at this stage. Plus if there is a knock on the door you know that the child will not be trampled in the mayhem that will happen.

Children (1-2 years)

This stage in a child’s life is a little difficult to prepare for. Make sure the cords are not visible, the electrical outlets are not accessible or have plugs (they are very cheap, don’t waste time on this). Remove all clutter from the bottom shelves, this includes magazines and photo albums that you don’t want to break. The good thing about this age is that you can usually put things over 3-feet (on a table or shelf) out of reach. Children use objects to stabilize themselves, so make sure that the furniture they will play on is stable (balanced) and does not have objects that can be affected by a little wobbling (think tall lamps, crystal vases). My worst example is the TV dish. We have one sitting on the couch and recliner to hold the remotes and drinks. My daughter (at 8 months) pulls herself up to use the bowl. Seven years later he still has an L-shaped scar on his forehead from pulling a bowl over himself.

You need to make sure that the little one doesn’t run around, so be ready to move! Children start climbing at this stage and if left to their own devices have the potential to enter the worst. Until they find out about your house, you can expect a few bumps and bruises no matter how careful you are (you should have seen poor Mr. C when S first brought him to our house). A small cold pack, antiseptic spray, and a few bandages will come in handy if you have them.

Now remember these are fixed for when you have a young one for a few hours. If you are going to have children often then you will want to make a room where children are safe. If you and your friend have coffee every Thursday then you probably want to get a little family proof and keep it that way so you don’t have to move things every Thursday morning just to give they returned on Thursday afternoon. If the kitchen is a better place you can put some rubber or a cabinet lock around your bottom counter then put a baby gate so the baby can’t escape. I also find it useful to keep a few old toys lying around my house. These toys become something special to play with during the visit.

Also, don’t underestimate the power of a good snack. Choose something they can feed themselves. I like Puffs because they are safe for children to eat and store well, but other good options are squeezable fruit, Cheerios, string cheese, and fruit or strawberries. Remember to ask parents first give any food for children (not that it can’t hurt them if they don’t get it but it can cause stress if they think they will and don’t). If the visit is to eat most of the children this age can eat the same food that you do (ask about allergies the day before) just cut it into small pieces and make sure it is cold. Having the children’s dinner prepared for them would be a welcome treat.

Walkers (2-4 years)

This age gets a little trickier. When children travel the world making their oyster. Everything needs to be checked which means that while you don’t have to be careful of the furniture, you still have to take care of them at all times. I have learned that if they are quiet it means they are on to something. I once stopped from work to do 10-minutes of computer access. I have my daughter (then 2) with me. It was outside my office; I can see it if I raise my seat back. I think it’s good because there are six other people in the office with me. I wrapped up what I was doing in the moment of needing to think to myself how good it was only to see that he had found a marker and drawn all over the wall. Thank goodness it only took me one more day to go to the store to find a Magic Eraser (love that stuff) instead of a gallon of paint! One of the challenges I currently face is my children’s toys. Every time my girlfriends arrive I keep waiting for them because they all seem to have small parts that are dangerous for children under the age of 3. Barbie shoes and Lego are my nemeses. I fix this problem by having the older kids move one of their toys from the family or dining room and put it in their room. I let my friend know that the family dining room is safe and use a baby gate. The temporary ones that fit on the wall are cheap and you can use them for pets and children.

Older children (4 years and older)

This level should be fool proof, right? They will not choke, fall or poison themselves. It mostly is, but I just wanted to add a few tidbits to help you out. First, I often forget that my children can now read. I always seem to remember this when I’m on Facebook, and one of my friends posts something that’s PG, and then my 8-year-old asks me to explain what that means. How or what my 6 year old child thinks they are doing. That dog took a picture like that. Whenever I warn them not to read over my shoulder and usually add the phrase “I can’t make you listen when I want, but as soon as I want 5 minutes alone I’m interested?” This is true of all media that I am studying. Not only the computer, but also TV and books. My kids can all work remotely and I have to remember not to leave my romance stories around. Although you may not be at risk of hunger from children this age, healthy snacks are always good to have on hand. Most importantly, remember that everything you have they will need (in fact this starts from two) so the more you can avoid eating or drinking everything you don’t want (or can’t) share with in front of their advantage.

A small investment of time before your guests can make your visit less stressful and you may (but not guaranteed) have a conversation with your friends Most importantly remember to enjoy the time with your friend even if it requires a little more effort.
