The Not-So-Common Cold
How in the world will there be such a word “flu”. My colds, I have noticed, rarely occur. Some went in and I went from good to bad in a flash. Others start with sneezing and runny nose and then they break into coughing spasms. Sometimes I have a little cough with a runny nose but I don’t feel well. When I look around and listen to other people with the flu, I see that we have less than we do. As a result of this observation I now say that influenza is unique to time and individual. The “flu” is a phantom of imagination.
Starting in junior high, I started having a constant nosebleed. It seems that no matter how healthy or sick I am, my nose just likes to run. Kleenexes became a joke as I filled every pocket, purse, and cranny. I’m surprised that this attitude continues to this day. Research says that the drip may be related to allergies but I have to think about this in the dead of winter and the stream continues no matter where I go, even abroad. Then three or four times a year, the nasal cough appeared in the cold. At least one of these was accompanied by a severe cough, aches and pains, or a low-grade fever. When I had my tonsils removed when I was four years old I avoided tonsillitis again, but I got sore throats often.
As I moved into adulthood, the pattern continued until my children started day jobs and public school. Of course they all changed the virus today and generously took it home to share. As I was teaching college at the time, I brought my fair share of bugs home as well. We did a cough/health thing, throwing the virus from one complaining person to another. My two sons, my daughter, and I dueled for the worst cough on a healthy day. While most visits to the doctor help my three children, it is a rare day that nothing works for me other than some cough medicine. And my husband, bless his soul, refused to be sick even for a day.
When I was 60 years old, the children were out of the house, I worked at the school only as a volunteer, and good health reigned. At first I credited my life change to my new energy and then I chalked it up to my cold. Finally I added the fact that I eat well, carefully eat good, nutritious food. I exercise, dress warm or lightly as the weather dictates. And for about three years the flu happened only once a year, and with a few days of serious rest, I could handle them in 7 to 10 days. I have discovered my own Fountain of Health.
However, 2015 has again shown the cold season at its best. I sliced through January with a cold that started on New Year’s Day and only left at the end of the month. I reduced my exercise and rest, but it stayed the same. February seemed fine until near the end when my old friend came back and lethargy and cough regained their strength. By the middle of March I was on my feet once more and ready to put in all the work I couldn’t do as I was in recovery mode. After two weeks of being healthy, guess what? I was cold again, this time with a wracking that scared even me. The half marathon had to be canceled (and if you are a runner you know how annoying this can be!) and I took to the cozy couch and slept again.
April is for me when my nose blows impatiently and my cough is normal. I force myself into action when not working feels useless, and then I go back into a huddled place again. The flu, rare in all of my races, has made me feel better. Oh, how long for the next few weeks to dry so that this cold will be gone and maybe spring and summer will restore my zest and drive the drips to loss of life. At this point, wipes and Kleenex are constant companions.
