NHL Realignment Explained

During the 2012-13 regular season of the previous year, the NHL and the NHLPA agreed to an adjustment of the team division. The new NHL Realignment is a radical departure from the old system of 6 divisions divided into 2 conferences. When the 2013-14 NHL regular season begins there will be 4 seasons. In the east – 2 groups of 8 groups. In the west – 2 divisions of 7.

The NHL is a 30-team league. Realignment divided the conference unevenly, breaking the fourteen-year streak of 15 teams in the East and 15 in the West. Dividing the conference into two groups of 15 no longer makes sense from a geographic perspective because the eastern part of North America is home to more teams than the western part. In the old system, some NHL teams in the Eastern Time Zone were forced to exist in the Western Conference, creating unfair travel times for players and unfair travel costs for owners. .

With the NHL Realignment in place, the Eastern Time Zone teams Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets enjoy a new escape from the need to travel west. In the previous process the Wings and Jackets were forced to fly across the South American, Midwest, and western parts of North America throughout the NHL season. The team just a little further east on the map afforded the luxury of playing in the Eastern Conference, where they avoided this tough road to their next playoff spot, a side of a couple of trips.

In 2011, the Eastern Time Zoned Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg, creating a time warp. The Winnipeg Jets operate out of the Central Time Zone. With the CST Winnipeg Jets playing in the Eastern Conference and the EDT Red Wings and Blue Jackets playing in the Western Conference, the schedule had to be adjusted.

The new division was supposed to last last season but the NHLPA voted against realignment back in 2012-13. Perhaps the remaining NHL Lockout prevented the PA from bringing about major changes to the game, at the time. With the Lockout in the rear view mirror, Realignment was finally approved in March.

NHL Realignment Playoff Structure:

From now on, the playoffs are free for all the fight for a place in the top 8 of the conference. Just like in the good old days, the NHL teams will battle against each other in the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs under the new NHL Realignment system. The Conference Finals will feature the surviving teams from, let’s say, the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division, and additional teams from the East’s Metropolitan Division.

Where the NHL Realignment differs from the divisional structure of the early nineties, is the introduction of the Wild Card. The last time the NHL used the go-through-your-division rule was 1992-93. Back in 93′ and six years before, the top four records in each of the 4 teams made it to the playoffs. From the two matches, one of the four teams must stand, the winner of the match, and advance to the Conference Final to become the winner of the conference’s other division .

This time around, the top 3 from each league’s four teams will be guaranteed a berth in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Instead of allowing the top 4 from each division, the NHL Realignment reserves the last two playoff games in each conference for the two best records, excluding those the team that placed in the top 3 in their group. Therefore, if the 4th and 5th teams in the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division finish the season with more points than the 4th team in the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division – they both make the playoffs, and Metro only is represented by 3 groups.

Because you cannot have a playoff format with 5 playoff teams from one division and 3 from the other, the Wild Card teams will be skipped. When the Stanley Cup playoffs begin, the best overall record in the Eastern Conference plays the Wild Card team with fewer points, regardless of the division the team plays in.

4 division. 2 for the meeting. The top 3 teams from each division advance to the playoffs. The 2 best records from each conference, other than the top 3 in their division qualify as Wild Card teams. The best record in the conference plays the lower seeded Wild Card team. * Wild Card teams may be passed over to neighboring players in the game.

Let’s say the Pittsburgh Penguins win the Metro Division and finish with all the points in the East. And the Toronto Maple Leafs finished 5th in the Atlantic, however, they ended the season with more points than the 4th team in the Metro. If the above-mentioned situation happens, the Toronto Maple Leafs will enter the Stanley Cup playoffs as the lowest Wild Card team, thus, they will cross and compete with the best record. to the east, a member of the City. It’s NHL Realignment’s way of making the best teams to make the playoffs.

It is also possible for the Wild Card to be irrelevant. There are two divisions in the conference, therefore, the conference will have two teams of 4. If the two teams of 4 have the best record outside of each division side top 3, they both make the playoffs. If the best record in the conference is in the 1st team in the division that is lower than the 4th team – everything is normal and the Wild Card does not work – or works, but does not replace the traditional games.

If the NHL is going to become the champion of the competition again, like the old days, then there is a possibility for a team from Division A to become the champion of Division B. If the Toronto Maple Leafs begin the playoffs in the Metropolitan Division playoff bracket because of their status as a Wild Card team, they will remain in that bracket throughout the first 2 playoffs. This creates the possibility for two teams from the same division to meet in the final meeting.

The biggest doubt about the NHL Realignment – if the two best teams in a conference play in the same division, they will be able to fight in the 2nd round of the playoffs, unlike, possibly meeting in the Conference Finals in the old system. This will happen very well this season in the West, between the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues.

NHL Realignment is only approved for three years. After three years there will be a realignment with the potential for two expansion teams to join the National Hockey League.
