Relationship Advice – 7 Practical Ways to Treat Your Friends and Family Like Treasures, NOT Trash!

Recently, I had a mysterious experience at a birthday party that I was invited to. In fact, I was completely ignored by family members and heard some negative comments about the guests of honor.

Is this bad behavior or wrong?

Now, having a foreign student, Jana, living with us this year has opened my eyes to American culture a lot, some good and some bad.

What we do for friends and family, for example. What I saw at that party was uncomfortable, to say the least!

I would never want to do that to a guest in my house. Don’t let my son ignore the people who come to our door.

But the incident made me think: is this the American model of behavior? Are we just normal or are we being dishonest, taking people for granted?

Maybe my family is very strange. It’s hard to know. I just realized that in my big family, visitors are treated well. In fact, we have welcomed many “strangers” into our table over the years!

Before Jana came to live with us, she said that Americans are cold. We all need our own space and don’t build relationships easily.

Now my family has nothing like this. Jana laughed with pride when I told her the story about all the children who were displayed in every corner of my parents’ house for their 50th birthday. No one even thought of staying in the hotel, and we have 30 plus children and adults in the house!

For example, my husband’s family always stays in the hotel when they visit because they want their own place.

Not saying there is anything wrong, but I just want to know how we Americans treat our friends and family. Do we ignore them in the name of “living”?

So, here are some ideas to help us overcome this tendency and respect the people in our lives:

1) Thank your friend or family when they enter your home. Staying close to the door is a good idea, especially for first time visitors. Many times, I greet my guests when they arrive in the driveway, mostly to show off the dogs, but also to make sure they know where they are coming from because of our upstairs door.

Jana just came home in the middle of working on this newsletter, and I jumped to turn on the light and greet her. Gestures like this make someone feel welcome and wanted. He smiled happily and said, “Do you miss me?”

As I write this, I realize how easy it is to take my husband for granted when he comes home. This is something for me to work on! How pleased he would be if I took the time to greet him when he came home from work!

2) When guests arrive, have your children introduce themselves. I am very happy for foreign students to be able to do this. They are trained from childhood to introduce themselves to elders, holding a firm hand.

My son is very shy, so I often have to help him do this. But still we make an effort. It will get better at it with practice!

3) Turn off the TV, talk radio, interrupt computer games, etc. Show that you value your guests by being there for them all, at least for the first time they are in your home.

4) Do not move away from the guest, make them uncomfortable by asking what they want every two minutes. My rule is, “first night you’re a guest, second day you’re part of the family!” Therefore, I serve the guests the first time they are in my house, but then I point to the glass and say, “help yourself!” This puts them at ease and makes them feel like a real part of the family.

5) If you invite a friend or family member to your home, especially for a long stay, don’t make them feel unwanted by sending them mixed messages. I remember one time ago I was visiting a friend in England. He was very tired of the guests but did not want to tell me, thinking that this would not be good. But as a result, I feel so dissatisfied that I don’t want to stay in his house! It would have been better for both of us if he had told me no in the first place so I could have made other arrangements and he could have gotten more rest!

In other words, if you invite guests into your home, be happy to see them, even if you have mixed feelings. You said yes, so do your best. Otherwise, if you want to say no, it’s best to come first.

6) When they leave, walk to the door or car. Stay until you see them drive away. I think this gesture makes people feel more desirable. If it’s dark, turn on the lights. I once fell on a step when he left a friend’s house because it was dark, and I held my baby! It’s a very dangerous thing and I’m making myself terrible! You don’t want this to happen to your friends and family! Take care of them by providing enough lighting!

7) Don’t just put friends and family to the “end of your list.” I know we are all very busy, but relationships are important.

Having Jana and her friends around has made my life a lot busier and my projects haven’t gotten done quickly. But then it hit me when I was talking with Jana and one of my best friends: I could miss the opportunity to have great kids here because I feel like I have to do too much and then I will have enough time. to get my project done. But I will be sad! I’m going to be very depressed because of all the stress we’ve been going through–the foreclosure on our mortgage, the uncertainty with my husband’s job, and now facing bankruptcy.

But instead of depending on these worries, I chose to bless someone else by inviting him into our family. And we had fun doing it! He was more than happy to show Jana and her friends things like the Air Force Academy football game or take the girl shopping or to the dance hall with her. These activities, because of the interesting people I have been involved with, have brought me more happiness than I could have imagined.

My projects will be completed in the end, but I will not always have Jana here. The same with my child. I try to enjoy every moment I have with him. Just a few more years and he will be an adult! Time flies and before I know it, it will be gone!

It is the same with all our relationships. We never know how much time we have with someone.

Like those who got on a plane on 9/11/2001 or went to work that day in the World Trade Center or the Pentagon. It’s just a star. But in an instant everything changed. Indeed, the whole country changed! Family members who have lost loved ones will do everything to get the last chance back, when they can say goodbye. The last hug and “I love you!”

Jana and I have many conversations, especially about American culture like work. We work and work and are not satisfied with life today! We are not satisfied with the people that God has given us. These people are gifts, treasures.

Treat that person in your life right now like a treasure and you will find a great reward. You will definitely reach new heights in your relationship!
