Spring-Clean Your Life – 6 Easy Steps

For some of us, the thought of cleaning just makes us itchy. All the time and effort involved in something that just has to be done again – usually, the next day!

But spring cleaning serves another, higher purpose. Not only does removing the cobwebs make you feel virtuous, it allows you to feel better, both physically and emotionally.

Here, I’ve done just that: give some tips on how to get rid of old habits and allow new, healthy options to take their place. The payoff? A light, brighter, happy for you. So collect your dustbins, keep your Promises and enjoy the fruits of your labor. You deserve it.

–> 1. Remove the decks.

If you are a city dweller and space is a luxury you don’t have, the best gift you can give yourself is to make the most of your square footage. One way – which happens to be the easiest and the best – is to spend a long, hard time looking at the things in your house, and then start throwing them away.

That’s not to say you should throw away all your loved ones or possessions. That would be useless, and unnecessary. Just get rid of what you have and throw away what you don’t need. For example, who needs five sunglasses or 12 umbrellas? Gaucho pants in 1978? A Buns of Steel VHS tape? No one! Throw it away!

The same goes for junk mail. Who needs it? Not only does it clog up your inbox and waste your time, it harms the environment and causes global warming. To get rid of pesky, unwanted mail, the Donotmail website has instructions on how to kick the mail to the limit.

–> 2. Throw your cookies.

If you are in the 40 percent of women who report being tired and fatigued all the time, your diet could be the culprit. Sugar and refined carbohydrates – the “free” food in our diet – create an instant energy boost that causes all known crash-and-brain syndrome.

The solution? Ditch the Twinkies and load up on simple carbohydrates instead: unrefined pasta, bread and brown rice. Not only are these foods a healthier choice, they are packed with fiber and provide less energy. And together with veggies, fruits, beans and pulses – not to mention protein (lean meat, chicken, fish) – you will get more energy.

And don’t forget, when it comes to choosing your fruits and vegetables, choose the skins, which are rich in antioxidants – healthy substances that protect our cells heart disease and cancer. Fruits to watch out for include plums, blackberries, blueberries; red apples; vegetables include eggplants, carrots, tomatoes, kidney beans and peppers.

–> 3. Remove your skin.

At the risk of sounding like an Estee Lauder ad, there is something to be said for removing the yucky layer of dead, hardened skin and replacing it with a new, revived epidermis. If spa treatments aren’t your thing, or you just don’t have the time or cash, try this homemade almond body scrub to gently and thoroughly exfoliate the top layer of dead skin.

You will need:

2/3 cup ground almonds

1/3 cup oatmeal

1/2 teaspoon of herbs (lavender, chamomile, etc.)

Plain yogurt, milk, or buttermilk, enough to make a paste

Essential oils for scent (optional)

Place the dry ingredients in a food processor or food processor until they are reduced to a coarse meal. Store this “scrub base” in a glass jar with a screw cap on top of your refrigerator until ready to use. When you want to use the base scrub, scoop out 1/4 cup into a small bowl, and stir in enough of the liquid ingredients (use it from what you have on hand – yogurt and milk are the best, but water works) to do. a paste. Apply the paste with your hands or a clean cloth, and scrub your body to remove the skin. Rinse thoroughly. Ahhh…

–> 4. Kill the tube.

Enjoying some evening time with the Ladies of Desire and a well-deserved pint of Chunky Monkey is fine – well-deserved, even. But new research has shown that the more we channel surf, the worse we get.

In fact, a recent study in the English journal The Lancet found that adults who enjoyed watching TV as children were more likely than older adults to be overweight, smoke and have high cholesterol. And women who watched three to four hours of TV a day were twice as likely to be overweight than those who watched one or two. Terrible!

The justice of this story? It’s better to take a quick walk down Wisteria Lane than just watch the housewives do it. What’s more, not only will vigorous exercise help reduce stress and improve your mood, just 30 minutes of exercise a day (or 10,000 steps), five times a week , is all you need to fit. So lace up your Nikes, strap on your pedometer and step briskly!

–> 5. Ditch the cigarettes.

We all know that smoking is a serious health problem. But did you know that smokers lose, on average, close to ten years of life? That’s scary stuff, to be sure.

The good news is, those who call it quits, after 10 years of smoking, can cut their risk of lung cancer by half. They are also healthier and have more energy to exercise without shortness of breath. You can’t beat that for spring-cleaning your lungs!

–> 6. start a journal.

While you are in the throes of cleaning and removing the outside, what about the maintenance of the spring inside as well? According to research by the American psychologist James W. Pennebaker, writing – also known as “writing” or writing – at least 15 minutes a day, about your thoughts and feelings, can help leave the “surprise” and do it for you. feel “better, physically and mentally.” In fact, repeating the problem or experience in words, instead of just thinking about it in your head, can help “remember the change in thinking.”

To get the most out of your expository writing, Pennebaker suggests asking yourself three questions: 1.) What? 2.) What do I think about that? 3.) Why do I feel that way? When writing answers, don’t worry about grammar, complete sentences or repetition. As Pennebaker says, “What counts is that you delve into your deepest feelings.” For journal inspiration, you may want to check out these two helpful books on the topic: Writing for Passion: A Guide to Helping You Manage Stress, or by Beth Jacobs (New Harbinger, 2005), and The Journal: Journaling to Awake Your Inner Voice, Heal Your Life and Manifest Your Dreams, by Sandy Grason (New World Library, 2005).

Good luck – and happy spring!
