Constipation in Children

Constipation usually means difficulty passing stool; decreased frequency in the opening of the stomach or the place of hard, dry stool. Constipation is a common childhood problem.

Signs that a child may be constipated include:

  • pain and straining when going to the bathroom. A hard stool can tear the rectum causing pain and more bleeding.

  • diarrhea or soil. When the digestive tract is blocked, such as constipation, the body tries to clear the bowel by flushing and moving around the blockage. The child may have marks on their underwear or dirt themselves when they do physical exercise. Constipation can also cause a lack of sensation in the muscles of the anus itself so that the need to go to the bathroom disappears.
  • Stomach or stomach pain and pain.
  • Other problems include headaches, skin problems, blurred vision, muscle pain, shortness of breath and fatigue. All this is associated with the reabsorption of toxins from the stomach and their remains in general.

What is the cause of constipation?

The most common cause of constipation is a diet high in processed foods and low in roughage. These are, however, not the only reasons. Other causes include the following.

  • Not drinking enough water.

  • Food allergy or intolerance. Allergies are often associated with dairy products and dairy products.
  • Eat more grain-based products, such as bread and pasta.
  • Controversies in intestinal diseases. Recently antibiotics or a diet that contains a lot of food and sugar can cause a deficiency in the intestines.
  • Children who are too involved in what they are doing will sometimes ignore the urge to go to the bathroom allowing the movement to become dry and difficult.
  • Iron sulphate is added to some foods such as wheat cereals, formulas and drinks such as Milo. In sensitive children this can cause constipation.
  • Stress and anxiety. Like adults, the digestive system of children contracts when stressed. This can cause bowel movements to pass too quickly (causing diarrhea) or too slowly, causing excess fluid, resulting in constipation.
  • Exercise is not enough. Exercise is required to strengthen the muscles of the digestive tract and move waste through the intestines.

What can you do about constipation?

You need to treat the existing problem, which is to remove the intestines, and then work on preventing the situation from happening. What you can do:

  • Massage to stimulate the movement of the large intestine. Have the child lie on their back and knees up. With warm hands use gentle pressure. Starting from the right abdomen, work your way to the rib cage, then cross the abdomen and the left side. This is a movement of the stomach and helps the muscles to move the stool.

  • Use fruit juice to help digestion. Juices can include apples, apples and lemons. Spinach, watercress and dandelion leaves can be added to small juices such as carrot, cucumber, beetroot and celery. These can be used sparingly or diluted.
  • Increase fiber intake. These include vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds and at the same time reduce sweets, chocolate, bread, bread and white rice. Don’t overdo the nuts though, as this can cause constipation.
  • Eat regular meals so that the digestive system can get into the habit of moving from time to time.
  • Increase the amount of water your child drinks. Children should drink 6 to 8 cups a day. Consuming milk, cordials and soft drinks can add to the problem so use filtered water and fresh fruit juices as much as possible.
  • Encourage more physical activity.
  • Increase the number of good bacteria in the gut by using probiotics.
  • Remind the children to go to the bathroom.
  • Change the child’s position when they go to the bathroom. Put a small stool in front of the toilet so that they can hold their feet on it and this will raise their knees and change the angle of the hips. This will put the baby in a position that requires less pushing.. Squatting is the best position for all humans during defecation.
  • Eat foods rich in magnesium. Magnesium is essential for muscle growth and a lack of magnesium can cause constipation. Foods rich in magnesium include nuts, whole grains and beans.
  • Add some psyllium seeds to the diet. For children who are prone to constipation a day of psyllium seeds can help. This is fiber that helps maintain the function of the digestive system. When mixed with water or fruit juice, they can form large and soft stools. To function properly, the seeds need to absorb water so the baby needs to drink plenty of water. The dosage for children over 3 years old is 1 teaspoon twice a day in addition to fruit juice.
  • Talk to your child about any problems or worries they have. Expressing concerns and getting reassurance can reduce the stress that may cause or worsen constipation.

You should see a doctor if constipation is difficult to deal with, if it is associated with severe pain or bleeding or if the child is doing everything well and the problem persists. Your doctor will determine if there is an allergic reaction and should investigate this thoroughly.
