Yorkshire Terriers – How to Wean Your Yorkie Away From The Mother To Have A Self-Sufficient Yorkie
Yorkshire Terriers are not the best mothers most of the time. I saw this when I bred my Yorkie and she gave birth to four puppies. At that time I was not at home and there was only one puppy. This pained me but I was determined to save the living puppy. My Yorkshire terrier doesn’t want to feed her baby. I had to hold him and force him to take care. He even stepped on the child to run away from him. After a week he got used to it and didn’t fight me anymore.
The puppy is now nine weeks old and doing great. The problem now is to get him away from his mother. I kept the puppy so I had to deal with this problem.
Mother and baby sleep together. I feed the puppy first thing in the morning so he won’t be hungry. I separated him from mom and gave him a small amount of breast milk and some canned food. Then he was so full that he went to sleep for an hour or two. I repeat this process every three to four hours. The result is that he is rarely tried by the parents because he is not hungry and the food I give him is more satisfying.
Within a week or two I would separate the puppy from the mother every time. They will be able to play together and socialize, but they will not be alone together for a while. Soon the mother’s milk will dry up and I will have a Yorkshire terrier puppy that is weaned and self sufficient. That’s what works well with a Yorkie.
