Infant Bronchitis – Everything Parents Need To Know
Parents can sacrifice their whole lives for their children. When their child is not well how can they sleep well?
When a child is constantly coughing and having difficulty breathing, you may think that this is not a cough or a cold. Well, talk to your doctor because your child may have bronchitis.
Bronchitis often occurs in the elderly. In this case, the big gas in our body is sick. Bronchitis is about babies with their breathing in their chest and lungs. This word is coined from the word bronchioles, a part of the bronchi of babies that are always smaller than adults. So the bugs in this are easily plugged & the bugs get in very easily.
When is your child at risk?
1. At the age of 6 months, the child will develop bronchitis. Until the child is 2 years old, this tendency is too much.
2. Babies have more pain during winter and early spring.
3. Children exposed to tobacco & belch smoke are also at risk of contracting this disease.
4. For babies, even crowded places can cause symptoms of pneumonia.
5. Infants are more likely to get bronchitis than women.
6. In the first 6 months, male babies who are breastfed are more likely to get this disease than those who are breastfed.
What is the cause of bronchitis?
Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV is a common cause of pneumonia in infants. Researchers have proven that RSV causes serious illness in children, mostly infants.
Other diseases that cause bronchitis are as follows:
1. Parainfluenza virus
This type of infection often causes infections in infants.
2. Mycoplasma
These bacteria are a major cause of pneumonia & many other lung related diseases.
3. Adenoviruses
This disease often causes diseases such as conjunctivitis and many other effects on the lungs.
4. The flu
These bacteria enter the human respiratory system and make people sick with cold, cough and some pneumonia.
What are the symptoms?
1. The child starts to cough and has a sore nose with a slight cough. This is the main symptom of bronchitis in babies.
2. Next, the child will suffer from difficulty breathing, which is both in inhalation and exhalation.
3. For a day or two, the child will have difficulty breathing with wheezing & coughing. By this time, you should know that the heart rate is going to be very fast.
4. Although all the above symptoms are mandatory, they are often accompanied by others such as fever and/or cold body temperature & decreased appetite.
How can doctors diagnose bronchitis?
If you see the above symptoms in your baby, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. The doctor will first review the child’s medical history and then evaluate the child with some physical exams. In addition, the doctor will decide on some additional tests that must be done. These tests are as follows:
1. Pulse oximeter
2. Chest x-ray
What treatments are recommended?
1. The child can get temporary help.
2. Next you should give your child non-caffeinated liquids. This will control dehydration in the baby.
3. You can choose to use humidifiers and/or saline drops. These will help the mucus to lighten up very quickly.
4. Sometimes, doctors recommend that parents and/or caregivers take their babies to the hospital to receive proper care such as giving fluids & oxygen as & when needed and provide good air quality. A very important thing in this case is that the child will receive the correct treatment.
Is bronchitis preventable?
When your child is saved from bronchitis, you should not make him suffer with other illnesses. So, you need to follow the preventive measures which are as follows:
1. During the dicey season for babies like winter and spring, remember to keep your baby away from people with cough, cold and flu.
2. Remember that as a parent and/or caregiver, you must wash your hands every time before handling a baby.
3. If you cough or sneeze, you must use a tissue or handkerchief to cover your mouth adequately.
In case you are likely to be sick, ask someone to take over your duties for a few days.
