Books Are Children’s Best Friend! – Choosing Children’s Book Tips

Women say, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”. But, for children, books are children’s best friends! Same with my daughter who is a book freak. He likes to read a lot. The book store is like heaven for him. I think it’s because we (especially me) started introducing him to books when he was only 5 months old. What I did then was read her a book with beautiful colors and large pictures and taught her to turn the pages one by one. I didn’t even if he understood the content or not.

Then, when he was old enough to “read” (I mean see) the books by himself, I started to introduce him to the bookstore. He liked it very much and this practice became his new habit. Whenever he sees that we have time to take him to the bookstore, he asks us to go to the bookstore to buy new books for his bookshelf.

Well, it took a lot of money, but it paid off when I saw my daughter now. She grew up to be a curious and intelligent girl who loves to read a lot. He can finish his reading in just a few hours after he buys these books. He is the second best in his class. That’s why I’m so happy for him (and also for myself for introducing him to the books early.)

Interested in doing what I did for my niece? This is what you need to know if you want to choose books for your children.

1. For babies and toddlers

Babies love pictures of things, like clothes or animals. Good choices are paper documents and books made of heavy cardboard. These books are durable and easy for them to maintain. Also choose books with bright colors, contrast, interesting images, and textures. Singing books are good for them too! For children, books about numbers, pictures, and animals are good.

What you need to do:

– Teach them to learn to turn the page

– Read the pictures to them.

Try these books:

-Peek-A who? – Nina Laden

– The Sneetches and Other Stories – Dr. Seuss

-Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What You See – Bill Martin Jr.

-Pat The Bunny (Touch and Feel Book) – Dorothy Kundhart

2. Preschool students

Children this age like books that have lots of pictures and vice versa. They also like stories about themselves or about others their age. Real stories such as tractors, engines are also their favorite. Choose books with stories that can be read in 5-10 minutes with one or two lines printed on a page, have a happy ending, and books with large and colorful pictures that almost tell the story stories Do not choose books that contain threats such as fighting or explosive games.

What you need to do:

– Read books out loud to your children

– Ask questions about the pictures and what your children think will happen next to get them involved.

– Help them tell the story of the individual pictures so that they play an important role in telling the story.

– Encourage them to fill in the missing words by using pictures.

– Ask them to find familiar letters and words to hold their attention.

Try these books:

– Bees (Education-to-Read series for Pre-schoolers) – Joyce. M. Wise

– “I Am” Memory Book for Pre-Schoolers – NA Woychuk

– Best Stories for 5 Years – Enid Blyton

3. For children aged 6-8 years

Some children this age can read well while others are just beginning. So, choosing books that suit your child’s level and interest is very important to do. You can start switching from picture books to chapter books. Look for books that have good capital letters with different spacing between lines and words. Also find books with good pictures in their first chapter and have controllable words in them that can be created.

What you need to do:

– Read the first chapter with your child, but make sure that the chapter is not too long.

– Ask your child to read stories to you instead of you reading them to him.

– Encourage your child to remember important words so that they know them immediately without making them up. Help him focus on these important words when reading a story. But, don’t let this dominate the reading so that he/she loses the thread of the story.

– Help him guess what he thinks will happen to be the words in the story.

– If your child is stuck with some words, encourage him using pictures.

– Guided reading to help you discover new books with children.

– Read aloud with all the emotions, accents, humor, and drama to make the books come alive.

Try these books:

– Time’s Story for 6 Years – Helen Paiba

– Seven Years Old Book – Isabel Wyatt

4. For children aged 9-11 years

Children at this age begin to view reading as a personal and independent activity. This is a great time to promote an interest in different types of books. Like adults, they need different types of books at different times and read a simple book to relax.

What you need to do:

– Give them different books at different times. There are many books to choose from according to children’s interests.

– If your child likes reading, sports, music, war, adventure, ballet book is a good choice for him.

Try these books:

– David and Max – Gary Provost

– The Old Town in Green Groyes: Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Lost Little House Years – Cynthia Rylant

– The Puffin Story Book for 9 Year Olds (Young Puffin Reads) – Wendy Cool

– Cool HeadLuke: and Other Stories – Jennifer Lasker White

– Captain America Second: Books 5-7 and The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby – Dav Pilkey

5. For children aged 12-15 years

At this age, children do not need help reading. The challenge for you is to try to ensure that your teenager maintains a love of books when there are many obstacles. Because, they start reading school books only and do not find such books interesting or entertaining. That’s why every reading you share with them should be interesting and fun. They tend to stick with mystery, horror, and adventure books and begin to move from children’s books to adult novels and non-fiction.

What you need to do:

– Help him choose a new one. Because, not all adult fiction is suitable for them, because the language or style of writing should not be presented to them. Choose books that create material that is ideal for the transition from children to adult literature.

– Talk to your child about his reading habits so that they like books and make them think about what they read.

– Ask for suggestions about books you might like.

Try these books:

– James’s Journey – Asha Khalil

– The 100 Year Old Secret (The Sherlock Files) – Tracy Barrett

Last but not least, prepare your home to be “open” easily for your family, so you can enjoy the book together at home. Happy reading with your kids!
