Where to Get School Supplies

The back-to-school season is the second most profitable time of the year for retailers. (After Christmas, of course.) Advertisements, “special deals,” and in-store products designed to lure you off course, entice you to spend more, and especially for your desire to “finally join!”

But, “back-to-school” organization has much more machine than it’s about products, it doesn’t matter *where* you buy school supplies. What’s important is that you don’t be tempted by a “loaded” new binder or a “beautiful” new book. There is often a very close relationship between schools and material management materials: the more material there is, the more expensive and ineffective it tends to be. Below, you will find a list of tools, divided into three categories of systems: Time Management, Product Management, and Document Management.

All of the items below are affordable and available from many stores and online.

** Time Management **

Time Management is an issue for students AND for their families; It is very difficult for a student to manage his time well in a family that does not. Ten minutes a week can solve this problem. Pull out the family calendar and have a “Sunday Summit.” Coordinate schedules for the week: upcoming sports, after-school activities, appointments, exams and due dates. Have your children write in their plans.

The key to a good Sunday meeting is to make it conversational, not questioning. This means you have to share your time, too. Do you have a deadline at work? Are you planning to finally go to the gym to do some exercise? Share your deadline and your goals with your children. You may be surprised how receptive they are! At least, you will start your week on “one page.”

Equipment required

  • Family Calendar
  • A learning planner for every child (The best planners are small–not big–step books with a monthly calendar and space to enter each day. usually provided by the school.)

** Product Management **

Most families have a “silverware sorter.” This is a bowl with holes designated for spoons, forks, knives, and utensils. Just about a house, you can decide where to put the spoon according to the organization of the silver bowl.

This household item inspired what I have called the “Silverware Sorter Theory.” This hypothesis states that the object will remain stable if it exists place of residence put it on them too easily accessible.

How does the Silverware Sorter Theory apply to school supplies?

The equipment must have a storage space in the book and a place in the house.

In the bag, students can use the front pocket of the bag or a pocket to store pens and pencils. If students are unable to bring an envelope during the school day, they may bring a 3-ring pencil in their binder (see Administration Form).

At home, a bucket or basket for school supplies (threads, pens, scissors, scissors, stapler, tape, markers, etc.) not only keeps things clean and set up; it also helps students manage time better. With the storage space, students will not have to travel around the house to find the needed equipment.

It is best to have a container with a handle so that it can be moved easily with one hand. This allows students to do homework in different places around the building, as needed. Create a special place on a shelf, table, or cabinet to store supplies at the end of the day. These designated areas help everyone to keep things organized because everyone will know where the things are.

Equipment required:

  • Front pocket of a book or a pen
  • A bucket or basket for school supplies (Especially if it’s great you already have the perfect box in your home.)
  • Standard equipment. (Back-to-school season is a great time to take advantage of deep discounts and stock up on supplies, but don’t overbuy… or you’ll create another organization nightmare for yourself!)

**Paper Management**

Document management is one of the most stressful aspects of school organization! Most students should have separate folders and notebooks for each class. The average student has 12-16 different papers and books that they want to manage. That would be like us trying to keep track of 12-16 different email inboxes every day!

The practice of maintaining multiple folders and notebooks also violates the Silverware Sorter rules because the product is unusable. Since folders and notebooks look the same when placed in a locker or bookbag, students often bring the wrong documents to class, or homework. With so many tools, it’s easy to leave them in a folder or book at home… with success.

The volume of “stuff” sends students to a lower level of materials and missing work, which then leads to poor grades.

To solve this problem, students should keep only one binder for each class. Believe it or not, they can fit a stack of 8 folders and 8 notebooks into one 1-inch binder. Just replace the two pocket folders with the plastic file inside the binder. Replace spiral notebooks with loose-leaf notebooks, using folders as a way to divide content.

To keep documents manageable, create a Paper Station at home. Paper Station is a special place to collect notes, originals, and other materials that will be useful for class tests and final exams, but do not need to be transported every day. The Parking Form can be updated during your weekly meeting on Sunday.

Note: Students who see only one teacher throughout the day (mostly K-4 students) only need one folder to bring home from school each day .

Finally, another very important part of document management is a function called “House Two.” Students spend the first two minutes of their homework time every night cleaning the trash out of the envelopes and organizing the documents into the binders.

Equipment required

  • 1-inch binder
  • Plastic binder folders, one for each class
  • Looseleaf notebooks
  • Box or crate from the house to the Station

**Conclusion**

Use these tips to create a few machines for your own back-to-school season. Then, when you’re in the store and you see a beautiful collection of new-fangled school supplies, you can be sure that it’s your machine, not your product, that’s making it. You and your children are involved!
