Fun Healthy Kids Snack – PB & Strawberry Jelly Smoothie
Moooom!!! I’m hungry!!!” I’m not sure how many other moms hear this but I hear it all the time. My nine year old son is very active…and very hungry. ., he needs large meals to get enough calories to meet his high energy (by the way, all meals take up a lot of space in your stomach, so they work mechanically makes you feel more…this is good if you are trying to lose weight, but if you have a growing child you need to make sure you are giving him plenty of food !)
However, small snacks (snacks for adults too!) should be packed with as many nutrients as possible. This is good in theory, but let’s face it, healthy foods (think kale!) don’t often appeal to kids. Out of curiosity, I just decided to Google “healthy snacks” to see what came up and sure enough, high calorie foods like pretzels, were on top of the snack bar. Feeding your kids junk food (like pretzels!) is one way to get them on the fast track to becoming obese and malnourished at the same time. You can meet the baby’s energy (calorie) needs by feeding him spoonfuls of sugar (which is what pretzels provide) but do you want your baby to get the nutrients they need to support healthy growth and immunity? But yes, I really “get it”, I know the basic rules. I am a busy frazzled mom and I too need snacks that are easy and quick.
Smoothies Save the Day!
Finding creative snacks for kids isn’t hard… the hard part is finding healthy creative snacks that your kids will actually eat. Smoothies are one of my favorite “go to” fun snack foods for kids because they pack a healthy amount of nutrients into a sweet, creamy almost like candy bar. And, they’re quick and easy enough that your kids can make them themselves. Watch my nine year old work below =)
Ingredients (Use 1)
3/4 cup plain unsweetened almond milk (such as Blue Diamond) or soymilk (such as Silk)
1 frozen banana, cut into chunks
1/2 cup frozen organic strawberries
1 tablespoon all-natural peanut butter (or raw almond butter)
2 teaspoons all-natural strawberry jelly (this is completely optional, it’s really sweet without the jelly!)
1. Put all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth and creamy. Drink cold water.
PS This is also a great recipe for a super quick breakfast.
