Over the Christmas holidays in Colorado, my family and I decided to go to a local hot spring. It was just what we needed to warm our bones from the cold of being outside all day cross country skiing. There are people of all shapes and sizes. What I happen to see in almost every woman and young girl is the appearance of cellulite on her thighs. I began to care who had more cellulite and who had less. No woman is immune to its effect. There are even female athletes with belly fat that have cellulite on their thighs. I find this very frustrating that few women have cellulite. What is it in our culture that is promoting the unsightly bulging and what can we do to prevent it? Is exercise important or is it something more than that?

What is cellulite really and how can we get rid of it? After doing some research on how to get rid of deposits naturally, I found that women in Europe go to health spas and use creams to get rid of cellulite or “no oil deposits” for at least twenty years. American doctors see this type of fat as a problem, but do not treat it as a “tissue disease” as European doctors do.

Cellulite is a gel-like substance made of fat, waste products and water that resides between the tissues beneath the skin. Cellulite is mainly a female problem because the percentage of body fat is higher in women and because the elasticity of the skin is greater. The fat layer under the skin pops on the tissue causing “bulging of fat” in the subcutaneous layer. In a healthy woman without cellulite, the fat will be in the dermal layer. This problem occurs when the blood vessels deteriorate and deprive the skin of essential nutrients. Second, fats combine and bind to proteins. Water engorges the brain due to toxicity in fatty tissue. The water dilutes the toxic waste products and creates a gel-like substance that creates an orange peel on the skin. It can be said that cellulite is an inflammatory process due to:

1. The first step to change is to use antioxidants to eliminate free radical damage and promote microcirculation. Vitamin C and vitamin A are the most important antioxidants for the skin. You can’t grow collagen without vitamin C. Vitamin A is one of the most important nutrients for keeping skin healthy and strong.

2. The second important thing is to increase circulation throughout the body. Gingko biloba increases microcirculation and thus, rids the body of toxins. Dry brushing is an important addition to our detoxification process. Brushing dry for five minutes every day is equivalent to half an hour of exercise. Use the brush to brush in a circle from the toes to the heart. This acts as a manual lymphatic pump to remove toxins and promote health. Use essential oils like rosemary and birch to start breaking down the fat. Put 20 drops in 4 oz. of oils that contain oil such as sesame or almond oil and rub into the buttocks, thighs and hips every day.

3. Eliminate acid producing foods and most dairy products especially if they are not organic. The lymphatic system has a direct impact on the appearance and condition of your skin. When the glands are clogged with mucus production, the toxins cannot be carried away and many of these waste products will be deposited in the skin. Cellulite forms when stagnant lymphatic stagnation of toxins are trapped in the fatty cumulations under the skin. Non-dairy dairy products contain many synthetic hormones that disrupt our hormonal system.

4. Regulate your hormones with special nutritious foods. The amount of estrogen in the body determines where the fat will be placed, especially in the hips, buttocks and thighs. At my clinic in Austin, Texas, I use formulas and special foods for each patient to break down waste products in the cells. The general way to do this is to squeeze half a lemon in water three times a day to break up mucus and stimulate the mind. Next, I recommend taking organic, apple cider vinegar (1 tablespoon in 8 ounces of water) before meals to stimulate the digestive process and alkalinize the body.

6. Boost your metabolism. Drinking three cups of green tea every day is one of the best ways to do this. It not only boosts your metabolism, has many antioxidants, but it has the ability to emulsify fat! The second ingredient to improve our metabolism is to use cayenne in our daily lemon juice. Cayenne stimulates our intestines and improves our circulation. Do not use cayenne if you have heat symptoms such as hot flashes or constant thirst.

7. Take saunas and hot baths regularly. The most important secret of cellulite detoxification is to heat and break the fat cells. Warming the body removes toxicity and increases your metabolism and circulation. After taking a hot bath, you need to squeeze and squeeze the thighs and buttocks with your thumb and first two fingers. Do this slowly, but firmly. By doing this, you are breaking down the fat and breaking it into the blood vessels. Then, use strong strokes to the heart to move the blood and lymph. You can use a dry, vegetable bristle brush for this. If you don’t have access to a sauna, a hot shower is great. Add essential oils such as juniper, orange and rosemary to stimulate the mind and remove toxins. Other additions can include Epsom salt and baking soda. Take two cups of Epsom salt and one cup of baking soda in the bath. Epsom salt draws out toxins in the body while baking soda alkalinizes the body. Cover for twenty minutes until you sweat.
