A Brief Overview of the Ketogenic Diet

The ketogenic diet, also known as the keto diet, is a popular diet that is high in fat, high in protein and low in carbohydrates. It is also known as Low Carb-High Fat (LCHF) diet and low carbohydrate diet.

It is mainly designed for the treatment of epilepsy that does not respond to drugs for the disease.

Diet was first published in 1921 by Dr. Russell Wilder of the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Wilder discovered that releasing epilepsy patients quickly helped to reduce the frequency of symptoms. At the time of his publication, there were few other options available for the treatment of epilepsy.

The ketogenic diet has been widely used for many years in the treatment of epilepsy in both children and adults. In several epilepsy studies, approximately 50% of patients reported at least a 50% reduction in seizures.

However, the arrival of anticonvulsant drugs in the 1940s and later gave the ketogenic diet to “other” drugs. Most doctors as well as patients, find it easier to use drugs compared to following a strict ketogenic diet. After that he was ignored in the treatment of epilepsy by most experts.

In 1993, the continued interest in the ketogenic diet was sparked by Hollywood producer Jim Abrahams. Abraham had his 2-year-old son, Charlie, taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital for epilepsy treatment. Charlie experienced sudden seizures within days of using the ketogenic diet.

Jim Abrahams founded the Charlie Foundation in 1994 to support research efforts. His TV show “First Do No Harm” starring Meryl Streep also helped promote the ketogenic diet very well.

Food is designed to provide the body with the protein it needs for growth and repair. The calculation of the calories consumed is done to provide an adequate amount that will be able to support and maintain a weight that is appropriate for the child’s height and weight.

The Basics of the Ketogenic Diet

The classic ketogenic diet has a “fat” to “combination of protein and carbohydrates” ratio of 4:1.

The daily calories on the ketogenic diet are as follows:

  • 60-80% calories from fat

  • 20-25% of protein

  • 5-10% of carbohydrates

The ratio of the nutrients in the ketogenic diet is designed to help the body become stronger and maintain a state of ketosis.

However, the ketogenic landscape has expanded considerably in its application and use. While the classical ketogenic diet is still widely used today, it has now formed the basis for the development of various ketogenic diets.

The ketogenic diet encourages eating 20 to 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. The amount of protein intake is moderate and often depends on factors such as gender, height and activity level of the person. Essentially, the total number of calories in food is equal to the amount of fat consumed.

Fat and protein in the Ketogenic diet

Eating more healthy fats is a key part of the ketogenic diet. Also, the goal is to maintain a state of ketosis at all times thus allowing your body to use more body fat for fuel.

The body digests fat and protein differently. Fat is arguably the body’s best source of energy and in a state of ketosis, the body is able to use body fat and eat food with equal amounts of fat.

In general, fat inhibits blood sugar and insulin production in your body. However, protein affects both of these levels if consumed in excess of what your body needs.

About 56% of excess protein is converted to sugar. This causes stress to the ketosis state of burning because the body causes the sugar produced by protein breakdown.

Depending on the type and source of fat consumed, a diet high in fat can lead to greater health benefits. Decreasing your food intake and increasing your intake of fats from medium-range fats will often increase your body fat.

A ketogenic diet increases HDL (good) cholesterol levels while simultaneously lowering triglyceride levels. These two are important markers for heart disease.

A ratio of less than 2.0 in your Triglyceride-to-HDL ratio means you’re doing well. However, the closer this ratio is to 1.0 or lower, the healthier your heart is.

This type of fat profile is associated with the prevention of heart attack and other heart problems.

Eating more lean protein when there is not enough fat in the diet can lead to “short hunger.” Rabbit starvation is a disease that has insufficient fat. This condition is found in foods that often contain lean proteins.

One of the main symptoms of rabbit starvation is diarrhea. Diarrhea can often be serious and can be fatal. This usually happens in the first 3 days to a week of a low protein diet. If you don’t eat enough fat in the following days, diarrhea can worsen and can lead to dehydration and death.
