What is a Healthy Amount of Sleep For Your Young Child?
From the moment your baby is born, it is important that they get enough sleep. If your child is not getting enough sleep, they will have trouble getting through the day and then sleeping at night. Sleep is built from birth.
Newborns (up to 6 months) need 16 hours of sleep every day – in 3 or 4 hour stints. It is normal and healthy for babies to wake up in the night to eat. As your baby grows, they will sleep longer during the day and sleep more at night.
Children under the age of one year need 14 hours of sleep. You need to help your child learn to go to bed, put them to bed at the same time every night and let them cry, eventually they will get the idea that it is time to sleep. This can be difficult for parents to let their baby cry and not go to them, but they need to learn that bedtime is bedtime. Most babies need 3 naps a day, morning, afternoon and evening.
Toddlers – 1-3 years old need 10 hours of sleep. Even if your little one is used to sleeping through it, they may start to fight during sleep. It is important to follow a routine and insist on a regular bedtime.
Preschoolers – 3 – 5 need 10 hours of sleep. Often at this age, children begin to have nightmares. Go into your child’s bedroom and sooth, but leave and let them settle down and go back to sleep.
If your child is fussy or cranky or has trouble sleeping at night, it may be because they don’t sleep long enough or they don’t wake up early enough.
Do not give your child drinks that contain caffeine. Try to keep TV and video games out of the bedroom. Many children will try to set bedtimes. Make sure you set limits and stick to them. Take your child in and read them a story. Keeping up with regular exercise is very important. Tell your child that they are safe and comfort them if they have nightmares.
Common sleep problems include:
o Sleep – if children don’t get enough sleep they will be cranky and have trouble sleeping at night.
o Separation anxiety – your child may experience depression if they are upset that you are not with them. Give them a long time before bed and give them something that makes them feel safe – animals or cuddly blankets.
