The Truth About Average Reading Speed
Before you can learn how to speed read, you need to determine your reading average. Your average reading speed is the words you can read per minute, or wpm (words per minute). The speed of a five-year-old child is under 150 wpm. The average speed of an adult does not get much bigger than 250 wpm. The reason for this is because along the way, we pick up many bad habits that make us read fast, such as sub-vocalization and back crossing. With speed reading, you can eliminate these bad habits and increase your reading speed to 1,000 wpm or more.
To find out what your average speed is, you need to know what your wpm rate is. Put the simple letters and count the words on the first three lines. Let’s say there are 33 words on that line. Divide this number by three to get the average number of lines. Count the number of lines in the page (let’s say there are 40 lines) and multiply this number by the number of words per line. In this example, there are 440 words per page. Do the same for the next four pages. Get your time and hit start as soon as you start reading. When you have read four pages, divide the page you read by its words per page. For example, 440 words per page times 4 pages is 1760 words read. Divide this by the time it took you to read it. Let’s say it takes you five minutes. 1760 divided by 5 is 352, your average reading speed.
There are many things you can do to improve your reading comprehension. Do you find yourself having to say words when you read? This is called sub-vocalization, a bad habit that makes people’s reading faster because we speak slower than we can read. Try to be aware of what you are doing when you read, and catch yourself when you start making noise. Another bad habit that lowers the average adult’s reading comprehension is backtracking. This is when you go back to read the word or sentence you will have glossed over. When you read, try to make sure you understand the word or block the words you read before moving on.
If you want to increase your average speed, a good goal would be 500 – 800 wpm. When your average reading speed is under 500 wpm, you will find that you can read more words in less time. Of course, make sure you can understand everything you read! Remember, speed reading is useless if you don’t understand what you read.
You can easily increase your reading average by reading every day, or by signing up for speed reading. Try the exercises on your own before you sign up for the course.
