Phar Lap – Australia’s Wonder Horse
Phar Lap’s list of race wins reads like a roll call of Australia’s biggest races: Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate (twice), Victoria Derby, AJC Derby, Futurity Stakes, Chipping Norton Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Memsie Stakes, Rosehill Guineas, Craven Plate, VRC St Leger, Chelmsford Stakes. Add to that the world’s richest race (Agua Caliente Handicap) and a sad death and you soon realize why Phar Lap inspired a movie in his honor and is the name family in Australia and overseas.
Phar Lap was born on October 4th, 1926 in New Zealand before being sold as a yearling to David J. Davis, an American athlete born in Australia, for 160 guineas. Davis’s first sight of the large 17.1-hand fruit, whose name is Thai for “radio”, was not good. He bought the colt based on his pedigree alone, and he thought he was getting a really good deal, until he saw the horse. Phar Lap arrived in Australia thin and frail, with shortness of breath. He also sports a basketball all over his big head.
Davis was very angry about the way Phar Lap looked and moved, and was even angry with the trainer Harry Telford, who told him to buy the horse. He decided that he would not waste his extra money by training the horse, and rented it to the same trainer. It would be Telford’s responsibility to pay for the training and feeding of Phar Lap, and then he would keep two-thirds of the money the horse won. Telford had long studied the pedigrees of racehorses, and felt that Phar Lap’s breeding was good enough that he could win. He was gelded so that the young horse would concentrate on his competition.
“Bobby”, Phar-Lap’s stable nickname, was joined by a stable boy named Tommy Woodcock. The horse was known to be a pretty prankster, and liked to play a bit of Woodcock. Phar Lap was so devoted to the boy that he would not eat if Woodcock came with him in the shop.
Phar Lap got off to a slow start in the tournament, not placing in his first four races. Finally, on April 27th 1929, he won the Little Boy Race at Rosehill when ridden by 17-year-old boy Jack Baker. When Phar Lap ran a strong second in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick on September 14 1929, he really began to gain the attention of the entire racing community. For all his short life, Phar Lap failed only once, in the Melbourne Cup in 1931. His strong muscles and strong heart were the advantage for him as he won the following races competition, including 14 of 16. that is four years.
Phar Lap’s victory was not satisfactory to everyone. On Derby Day, November 1 1930, someone tried to make him run in the Melbourne Stakes by shooting him. He didn’t care, thanks to the quick thinking of Tommy Woodcock, and went on to win the race that day. He also won the Melbourne Cup three days later despite problems and a delayed flight. At the end of that week a horse named Big Red survived the shooting and won four races.
Phar Lap traveled to Mexico by boat with luxurious services from equine standards to compete in the $100,000 Agua Caliente Handicap. Although he had a long journey, and still had a hoof injury, he won the race and proved to the racing world that he was the wonder from Down Under.
Then beat Phar Lap next to the United States. He was enjoying writing at a rental agency in Menlo Park, California when his owner was negotiating for him. Early on April 5, 1932, Tommy Woodcock noticed that Phar Lap looked sick. He took the horse’s temperature, found that it was elevated, and then found that the horse was in serious condition. In the middle Phar Lap began to hemorrhage and soon after he died. Woodcock was inconsolable, threw himself on the horse’s body and howled.
Australians, Americans, and people around the world were shocked and shocked when Phar Lap died suddenly. An autopsy was performed, and it was found that the horse’s intestines and stomach were very painful, which led to the belief that it had been poisoned. Rumors began to fly that Phar Lap had been poisoned on purpose. The ranch where he lives has recently been sprayed with arsenic. It is also said that Tommy Woodcock accidentally overdosed the horse on a tonic containing arsenic. Called Fowler’s Solution, it was given to horses to help their appetite. Scientists later confirmed that, whether intentional or not, Phar Lap almost died from an overdose of arsenic.
Phar Lap still stands at the Melbourne museum as a tribute to his achievements. The National Museum in Canberra has his giant liver that weighs 6.2kg, almost twice the size of a racing horse.
