Robert Pershing Wadlow – The Tallest Man in History

He was born on 22nd February 1918 in Alton, Illinois (USA). He was the first of five children to his parents, Harold and Addie Wadlow. They went on to have two sons and two daughters. Amazingly, his brothers and sisters are only the same height and weight. Robert’s own weight at birth was nothing out of the ordinary at 3.85 kg (8 lb 8 oz). In fact, for the first two years of his life, his growth was normal. When he was two years old, he had to have a double hernia operation. It cannot be said if there is a connection to that, but from then on, everything began to change dramatically.

Its rate of growth has increased significantly. When he was 5 years old, he reached a height of 1.63 meters (5 feet 4 inches) and he reached 6 feet tall when he was only 8 years old. For the next 4 years he grew an average of 2.5 inches a year until he was 12 years old, when his height reached 2.10 meters (6 feet 10.5 inches).

In the next 3 years, its growth accelerated further. He grew another 24 cm (9.5 inches) so that he was 2.34 meters (7 feet 8 inches) when he was 15 years old. For 2 years after that, its growth slows down a bit to more than 2 inches per year. When he was 17 years old, his height was 2.45 meters (8 feet 0.38 inches), but he just couldn’t grow.

In the next year, it grows another 8 cm (just over 3 inches), but only 2 inches the year after that. Now he is 19 years old and his height is 2.58 meters (8 feet 5.5 inches).

In the next 2 years, its growth slowed to its slowest rate for some time, but still it grew. By the end of his junior year, his height had reached 2.61 meters (8 feet 6.75 inches). He was 2.65 meters (8 feet 8.25 inches) tall when he was 21. His last measurement was 2.72 meters (8 feet 11.1 inches) when he was 22 years and 5 months old.

As you can imagine, it is impossible to walk in public without being attracted. People will inevitably stare and the crowd will come to join him. Some people, not being kind, would kick or pull his legs to check that he was not on stilts.

His extreme height has obviously made life difficult for him. He can’t work like people of normal height can. He can’t ride a bus, train or plane. The seats are only designed for people who are 6 feet or less. He’s healthy despite all that, but he’s been having circulation problems in his legs and doesn’t have much feeling in his feet.

He is not only the tallest man, but he also has the biggest hands and feet. His shoes had to be special, like his clothes. His shoe size is 36 (37AA for American measurements), they are 47 cm (18.5 inches) long.

Human growth is caused by a substance called “somatotropin”, the source of which is given by the “pituitary gland”. When he was 12 years old, doctors discovered that this gland had become dysfunctional, which caused him to grow abnormally. His parents were told that surgery would be risky with no guarantee of success, so they decided against it.

Robert sadly died in his sleep on 15th July 1940. He was buried in his hometown. His coffin was 3.28 meters (10 feet 9 inches) long and had to be carried by 12 men. The city closed for business out of respect and more than 40,000 people signed a petition at his funeral.
