Art Instruction Schools Review – Can You Draw This?
Some years ago when I was teaching engineering at Iowa State University, I submitted a small test that could get you into the Technical Schools. I passed the test but never heard from the School again which was just up I-35 north of me.
A few years ago, I took the test again. me again. Nothing happened. I looked on the Internet and called the school. The school sent me some instructions but did not give me a chance to register for the course. Then one day I got a call from an old man who lives in Tooele, Utah. He said he was coming to see me and started drawing so he could see what I would do. A week later he showed up in his old car, told me he had covered most of the western states, and asked if I could afford the course.
Getting those rules out of the way, he looked at my drawings. I asked, “Do you think I can learn to draw.”
He looked at my landscape pictures on the wall of my house. Finally he said, “Yes, you can learn to draw.”
I wrote him a check for three years even though he told me to pay him by the month, gave him a few ideas for the painting, and took him to interview the young man that he thought would be not being able to buy things. class.
I have now completed the course except for the final exam which I have not yet received. Here are my thoughts:
1. The price is very reasonable for what you get, but it costs almost $3,000.00. However, you can pay by the month if that is important.
2. Each lesson comes in a separate book. You get one book at a time except for the first one when you get the first two lessons. I find that sometimes I have to wait for a lesson to come back longer than I want to wait. However, almost all lessons are returned within 30 days. There were some long delays because the artist was on maternity leave, including my post teacher. The staff has had a baby boom this spring. I am asking for the instructions to be sent in advance so that I can graduate in 18 months instead of three years. I got my last lesson in a big group. This is not a good idea – it’s better to see your grade and criticism from the previous lesson before you start a new lesson – but I’m an old man with a pig’s head aortic valve and time is precious to me.
3. Each lesson is very broad. You will find examples from great artists, from other students, and from Art Education Teachers. All procedures are explained clearly and skillfully. There are activities in each lesson that must be completed. Finally you do your work and submit it for grading.
4. What I am surprised is that every lesson that you complete by submitting a final sketch or drawing is not only evaluated but also graded by the teacher. This is important because you are not criticized but told what to do. The teacher draws your picture and puts it on top of your picture with useful words on the overlay to help you understand the lesson at hand. In any case, my work is like crap next to the teachers.
5. I didn’t call to talk to the teacher until I learned well even though I was told to do so in every lesson. That was an unprecedented opportunity. When I called, I realized how much knowledge there is at the Art Institute. I have never been brushed by a busy coach. I always put in as much time as I need and then some. The teachers are professional artists and good teachers.
6. I only met one student during my class. He is an American Indian who lives not far from me on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation. He is a very talented person and I don’t see why he can’t learn. He told me one thing he learned from the class (he was behind me) was patience. I have to agree with that. Drawing takes time and you need to give your brain a break to do it right. The school always says not to rush your work. For me, that’s hard. I bought a painting from the young man. He wanted $20.00 and I gave him $10.00. He took it because he had a date that night. I think I just came from a store and was still in exchange mode. I decided that I owed him about $10.00 because I really liked the picture. I’ll give it the next time I pass that way.
7. My picture doesn’t compare with the teachers but I was able to maintain a “B” average in the class. For that, I received a special certificate for each section indicating that I performed above average. I only got a few “C” grades and an “A” grade.
8. The most interesting lesson for me is the use of color. Now I only use three main colors for my landscapes, it’s rare to see one color in one tube. Learning to use ink washes and colors is fascinating to me. However, the focus of the course is art. If you can create art, you will be a better painter, not from the accuracy of the drawing but from seeing tones, light and shadow, and textures.
9. I learned as I went that I didn’t know the previous lessons as well as I should have. I kept going back to see what I was doing compared to what the instructor was doing as examples of what the instructor was going to do. As always, I was in a hurry. I am goal driven. I picked up a guidebook and said, “I’ve got this baby over there.” That is the wrong way. Take three years.
10. Some of the many skills taught in the class are writing, design, writing, etc. The company was started in 1914 to train artists for the United States Mint. When I had to create a stamp and get the teachers on my stamp, I realized that the history of the school is still in evidence. I am happy with my stamp and my wife likes it very much, so does my daughter-in-law (who is very polite). But the teachers using my design are stupendous.
The school has about 5000 students, so I was told. They choose who they enroll as students who can pay for the course is important, but if you can’t learn art in the mind of a man in old car, you can’t. accepted.
Did I get out of the course I wanted? What I want is to improve my landscape. However, I have only done a few areas since I took the class. But I know that my landscapes will be better after learning. There are no other subjects. If they offered a special class on landscape painting, I would take it.
There are famous school graduates. Charles Schultz of Snoopy fame is a graduate and also a teacher at the School. The reason is, there is a lesson about cartooning and I just love it. You can find one of my cartoons but I’m not allowed to tell you how to find it on the Internet. That would be self-aggrandizement.
The basic art class at Art School is a humdinger!
