Special Education IEP Cheat Sheet For Parents
Are you the parent of a child with autism, learning disabilities or physical disabilities? Are you preparing for your child’s annual Individualized Educational Plan meeting? Do you need a short list of important items to discuss in your child’s IEP meeting? This article will discuss 15 issues that should be brought up at your child’s IEP meeting to ensure that all important issues are addressed.
Issue 1: Current levels of academic achievement and performance should be discussed and incorporated into your child’s IEP. Learning and performance should be the results of the tests given to your child, not the evaluation of the teacher.
Problem 2: Learning strengths and weaknesses of your child. All weaknesses should be discussed and needs for educational assistance should be discussed and documented in your child’s IEP.
Issue 3: District and State Tests in which your child will be included. Standardized testing is important so that special staff are responsible for teaching your child; keep copies for future reference.
Issue 4: The Extended School Year (ESY) should be discussed and written into your child’s IEP. The specific services your child should receive, including the number of minutes per week, and the number of weeks offered.
Issue 5: The Technology Support Your Child Needs to Benefit from Their Education.
Problem 6: If your child has bad behavior that affects their learning, ask someone qualified to evaluate the behavior and develop a good behavior plan.
Issue 7: Placement needs to be determined and included in your child’s IEP.
Issue 8: Intervention programs should be discussed and included in your child’s IEP. Related programs are: PT, OT, Speech/Language, Transportation, etc.
Issue 9: Ensure that all special education services are included in the IEP; check the minutes and make sure the service is direct or counseling and individual or group.
Issue 10: If your child is 16 years or older a transition plan must be made that includes transitions your child needs to work or attend school.
Issue 11: The graduation date must be on the child’s IEP. Remember that the specified date is until your child turns 22 as required by IDEA.
Problem 12: The main procedure should be included as well as the minutes that the procedure will provide per week.
Issue 13: Any tests that have been done on your child. The following average test scores are generally listed as averages. Check all test scores; if there is a lower age and level of friends, make sure that there is a service to fix the problem.
Section 14: Make sure the appropriate page for your child states that they are eligible for special services.
Section 15: Exams before and after your child’s next school year. Pre-test given at the beginning of the year, post-test given at the end of the year. This will help you prove if your child has progressed or not in the school year.
Always read your child’s IEP before you leave the meeting. Ask for a change if you see something you don’t agree with. By discussing these 15 issues you can help your child get a free public education (FAPE).
