Parents Guide to Writing Private High School Application Essays

Your son’s admission to a private high school cannot be taken for granted. With public schools dealing with many problems – discipline, bad tests, safety – private schools provide your child with a good education in a safe environment.

When you request an information package from a private school, you will find that essays and short answers are required from you and your teen. Your child, who should be willing to answer written questions, will be asked about his/her academic strengths and weaknesses, his/her desire to attend a private school and about his/her hobbies and further education. Questions directed at parents, however, are often different and designed with different goals in mind.

In general, the questions written to parents are situational analysis. Instead of asking the truth, these questions ask you to talk about your teenage personality, to talk about family dynamics and to evaluate your role as a supporter of a private school. Private college leaders recognize that young people who have grown up in a stable, focused home schooling environment are more likely to be successful than their peers who are not. have support at home.

Likewise, private school administrators look at your answers to determine whether you can be counted on to support the high school financially or through volunteer work. As you can imagine, managers cannot legally or ethically ask some of these questions but they can draw conclusions based on your answers to the questions in the application.

Analytical questions

For example, an admissions question might ask whether you believe your child can contribute to XYZ school. These questions are for you to talk about your child’s academic, social, sports and interests at school. If you visited the school, use your visit to show that you made an effort to learn more about the school. Your answers should address all of your child’s interests and strengths. Here is an example answer to this question:

During our recent visit to XYZ School, Tommy pointed out to me the great lab and asked a lot of questions about the research materials available to students at the school. Tommy has a long-standing interest in science education and he excelled in elementary school and we believe he will bring that interest and expertise to his high school education. His teachers now note that Tommy always asks thoughtful and insightful questions in class. In addition to working hard to excel academically, Tommy would be a proud member of the school’s basketball team and/or his track team. Tommy keeps a busy schedule during the school year and as a well balanced and mature young man, he will represent the mission and message of XYZ School now and in the future.

Family security and religious questions

Other questions will ask you directly about your future involvement in school fundraising and other activities. These questions are designed to assess the stability of your home life and your ability to support the future financially. For example a school religion application may ask about the role your religion plays in your life. A non-faith school will ask why you are considering XYZ School. Here is an example answer to this question:

Our family is a member of the XYZ church. We are key members of the social services committee and every Thanksgiving, our family, including Tommy and his two sisters, volunteer at XYZ Church to donate gently used clothing. that we help distribute gently used clothes to the homeless. Tommy and his sisters were greatly influenced by these activities as well as other church activities. With the opportunity to serve the less fortunate, Tommy has a personal understanding of the message of XYZ religion. We try to reinforce that message at home by attending services regularly and making daily prayer a part of our work. At XYZ Private Elementary School, my husband and I serve on the Board of Directors and we are participants in the school’s annual Feed the Hungry campaign.

Answers like the ones listed above are designed to send a message to school administrators that you and your teen are dedicated, dedicated and stable people who will fit in well with the community that develops in a private school. If you make an effort to learn about the type of community that exists in a particular school and you model your admissions questionnaire around that community, you will improve your child’s chances of getting accepted. enter.
