5 Things I Learned From Ken Robinson

Education expert Sir Ken Robinson is more than a New York Times bestseller. He is a dynamic speaker and leader in development in creativity and innovation. Currently a professor of education at the University of Warwick in the UK, he has received honors from five different universities as well as many awards. In his fruitful career he has been a creative and artistic advocate in international education.

After watching Ken Robinson’s talk at the famous TED conference in 2006, I couldn’t help but be amazed at his amazing views on the subject of yesterday, today and tomorrow. What did I take away from his words? The following five points summarize how, as Robinson says, “our schools are killing creativity in our children”.

1. We all have creativity:

The key to unlocking creativity, as Ken Robinson puts it, is accepting the fact that sometimes as thinkers and innovators, we will make mistakes. Unfortunately, most adults are stifled by the fear of making mistakes. This fear is instilled in us at a young age and as we go into adulthood. Preschool children do not share this concern and therefore have no problem tapping into their creativity. When asked a question, children will be eager to volunteer many creative answers. It wasn’t until they repeatedly said they weren’t that they began to be cautious about volunteering. Creative people accept failure as part of the innovation process. Thomas Edison tested his model of electric light more than 3000 times before getting it right, but he did not see it fail. When asked about it, he only said that he didn’t lose 3000 times, but saw 3000 “ways it didn’t work”. This is the kind of thinking it takes to succeed in innovation – and in life, for that matter.

2. Knowledge is diverse, dynamic and different:

We know that everyone expresses their wisdom in different ways. A system that focuses on one way, one way of doing things, undervalues those who don’t fit the mold. In his speech, Ken Robinson told the story of a dancer, dance teacher Gillian Lynne who, as a girl, struggled in a traditional school. He just couldn’t stay. After discovering dance, he flourished and went on to have a successful career as a dancer and artist. Today teachers and doctors will diagnose him with ADHD and give him medicine to cool down! His ability will not be recognized. How sad that we stigmatize other types of intelligence that don’t measure up to current standards. Many gifted kids slip through the cracks because their unique gifts don’t fit the mold in today’s education. We need to expand what we teach our children so that they all realize their potential!

3. Our Education for a Different Time:

As public education was created to meet the needs of the industrial revolution, the subjects that were most useful for training workers came first. Most of the jobs during the industrial revolution did not require creative thinking. Even today, we have an education system with an emphasis on math, science and standardized testing. Left-brain dominance is preferred. A system that tends to push creativity aside. Schools, more often than not, teach children that there is only one answer to a question. When we are taught to believe that there is only one answer, we see the world as binary – yes and no. When we begin to see the world, if a teacher asks a question and the students do not know the answer, they will not open their mouths. Therefore, children tend to lose their interest in trying new things and coming up with their own independent ideas. We must support the opposite. We need to change our education to meet the needs of the current market, where innovation is a valuable commodity.

4. We Need New Laws If Our Children Are To Grow Up:

As Ken Robinson explained, our education can, “put our minds” to the goods. We have developed this system for this purpose in the past, but it has become obsolete and needs to be revised. Tomorrow’s world with its constant population, increasing global instability and fragile environment, will need creative people. We need people who can anticipate emerging needs, propose new solutions, and stay relevant in a complex, ever-changing world. The system that is currently in place only limits the creativity and ingenuity of tomorrow’s leaders and innovators.

5. “Academic Inflation” and Global Competition:

More and more people are getting degrees all over the world. In 30 years time, a Bachelor’s degree will be almost worthless. To have a job, you will need a masters or doctorate. Already we see college graduates returning home with parents without job prospects. So, how do we make our children stand out from the crowd? Inevitably, we must rethink our definition of intelligence if our children are to make it in an increasingly competitive world. Only if we support their creativity will they stand up.

Changing our education system is not only necessary, but important. Acknowledging all wisdom will prepare us for the unknown, forever changing. Continuing on the same path, with a constant process in place, will mean wasting talent and not being able to find it. Encouraging untapped potential and wisdom is one of my favorite things about working with young people. What a life changing gift to give to another human being. I alone, I’m not ready to let more children grow in life because they don’t fit the mold… Are you?
