Parents Beware, Karate Nightmare

Earlier this year my eight year old daughter joined Karate. It was all a good experience for him and he enjoyed learning about acting. We chose the dojo as a place near our house and from the beginning we had some problems, but we liked a teacher … and he did a great job of influencing the children and parents.

As my daughter’s participation grew and we were asked to sign a long-term contract (three years) so that she could move to the middle level of training and to the “black belt”. (They won’t put him in the program without a contract). Not long after that is when it all goes south. The teacher we liked and respected left the school and we were not satisfied with the level of teaching. Some parents told the owner, who said he was a “good” teacher. But like art, thinking about teaching is subjective. Although he thought he was doing a good job, we just weren’t as happy as we were. Also, a fifteen-year-old girl, who was obviously new to teaching art, taught two classes that I just saw.

My wife tried to get out of the contract, only to find out that the “financial services” company that handles the bills won’t allow us to cut, and the dealer says we need to talk with them. I thought we would have to pay a month or two to cancel…but no….they want us to pay another $150 a month even if we want to stay there, or even if we show up again . (they told my wife that our interest or cooperation had nothing to do with the contract).

Other parents in the community have told me about similar experiences with this karate school. I checked with the local Better Business Bureau and found that the school had an “unsatisfactory” rating. There have been three complaints with the BBB since February about “sales issues” and “billing or billing issues”. In all cases the owner of the dojo just ignored the BBB (no response to the complaint), which means that he did not try to work with the customer’s complaint. This is a bad sign.

I work in a professional environment where good and ethical business people want happy customers, not those locked into contracts. This is my first experience with someone who doesn’t care about customer service.

I spoke with two lawyers who said that there are many types of these businesses (karate schools, gymnastics studios, dance lessons, gyms, etc…) as a forced practice that the payers of the bonds do not express interest or cooperation. They outsource their contracts with “writing companies” who know how to structure it so that customers don’t have the rights that are always needed.

My wife was led to believe that the contract was there for us to join the program and cover the cost of black belt training. They forgive her knowing that there is no way out…. and also, our daughter cannot succeed in her education without a contract. Never had any experience with this type of business…..It really doesn’t feel good to us that this is going to be a problem. It’s like a gym membership where a thirty-day cancellation notice is all that’s required to move. He has been karate for only eight years!!!

I’m disappointed in all the problems because the martial arts show honesty, integrity and respect. I have spoken with the “leaders” of the karate clubs only to find that they are not involved in the dues and contract issues of their dojos (RED FLAG). I was told “there are many promises, but most schools won’t force you to pay if you don’t attend”. Beyond that statement there is nothing they can do for me.

When getting children involved in their programs they are friendly, but the tone can change quickly.

I am currently looking at legal options. Fortunately, we have great advisors. If the owner of the karate academy believes that we should pay for three years ($5000) of lessons that we will never receive….then he is not the man I want my family to associate with. before. .

I am angry, sad, disappointed, frustrated, and sorry that we have to deal with this situation. I have learned a few lessons that all parents should follow when getting their kids involved in karate (and other martial arts) or any other activity:

1. Don’t choose your school, academy, dojo, studio, etc… as a location. Find the one with the best reputation.

2. Ask other parents about their thoughts on the company. Ask people who are currently working in the field and especially those who have been involved for a long time. Also, find others in your community who may have participated in the past.

3. Run a free business report from your Better Business Bureau. If there is a complaint, this may (or may not) be a reason for concern. How the company responds to the complaint is even more important if there are complaints on file. If the business does not respond to complaints, be more cautious. Never sign a contract with them if there is an unanswered contract and not satisfied with the payment. This means they will ignore your complaints if they happen in the future.

4. Specify cancellation fees and rights. If it is not clearly stated in the contract, make them write or refuse to sign the contract. Don’t take it lightly because it’s a child’s work.

Although we all hope that the people who support our children’s activities are good souls who make our children have great experiences, that is not always the case. I hope others can learn from our mistakes.
