Ghana – Fifty-Two Years of Hope

There is a beautiful Ghanaian proverb that can be translated to this effect: “A new chick that survives will not have time to grow feathers.” It means “when there is life, there is hope.”

Fifty-two years ago (6 March 1957 to be precise), Ghana made political history in Africa. That day, the gold coast became Ghana. How did it happen? At midnight that night, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, flanked by some ambitious comrades of his, mounted a podium at the old Polo ground in the city of Accra and announced:

“Finally, the war has ended; and Ghana our country is free forever.”

The visionary Nkrumah later made seemingly unproblematic statements that made him the African Man of the 20th Century. He declared, “The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked to the total independence of the African Continent.”

Yes, it is important to tell the true story of the Independence of Ghana so that our children, their children, and their children’s children will know for sure that Ghana is a the country of “Freedom and Justice.” At the time Dr Nkrumah published this legend, only about eight of the 53 countries in Africa knew what democracy was. In West Africa, all 16 countries are locked in the jaws of Colonialism. As for South Africa, it was deep in the throat of a hateful and dangerous people called “Apartheid.”

Ghana’s independence was not handed to our forefathers on a silver platter. In other words, our ancestors did not eat enough, drink, drink alcohol and go to bed and start snoring then someone went and called them to get their freedom. Absolutely not! As a matter of fact, the independence movement did not begin on March 6, 1957 when the ceremony was announced.

If Osagyefo Dr Nkrumah talked about the end of the war, we must ask ourselves how he was talking about the war. Again, it must be remembered that it was not Dr Nkrumah alone who fought for Ghana’s independence. But it is the locomotive or vanguard indeed! So it is important that every time we celebrate the independence day of this festival called Ghana, other important national heroes must be recognized know what they deserve.

For example, tributes should be paid to veterans like Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe and Private Odartey Lamptey who were killed like criminals on the 28th of February, 1948 at Christiansburg, Accra . What are they doing wrong? They just went to give the petition to the Colonial Governor of the Gold Coast. They are just fighting for them ex gratia gift after they have been on the war front for many years.

It is their blood that galvanized the power and worked as a catalyst for the legendary BIG SIX to the gold – the INDEPENDENCE. The BIG SIX includes Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Dr JBDanquah, Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey, Mr. Ofori Atta, Mr. Akufo-Addo and Mr. Ako-Adjei. These were collected and dumped in prisons all over the country; are they thieves? These are the most important people in the country that we should worship whenever we celebrate the anniversary of Ghana. This is why our country’s pledge reminds us in part: our fathers; I pledge myself in everything to promote and protect the good name. of Ghana.”

Today, as we celebrate 52 years of Ghana on the theme: “Unity and Peace: Pillars for National Development,” the least we can do is to renew the promise and commitment to our father and mother Ghana.

Besides the historical and political significance of independence, what can one say about the economic achievements of Ghana since independence? Although the political situation of the country since independence has not been rosy at all. For the armed forces that did not include the revolutions of the 60s, 70s and early 80s caused an obstacle to the democratic control of the country.

Fortunately, however, since the enactment of the Fourth Republic Constitution in 1992, which was led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on January 7, 1993, Ghana has enjoyed a change change the government through free elections instead of military coups. ‘let’s go. The popularity of this work is commendable.

Only last year, 2008, for the first time in its 52 years of existence, Ghana scored high in terms of democracy among African countries when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) elected another government. His mandate is for a period of eight years and beyond. for NDC again. The beauty of the culture of “moko aya ne moko aba” (let one person go to another person) is a success for the development of Ghana.

It is against this background that the theme for this year’s celebration “Unity and Reconciliation: Pillars for National Development” is most appropriate. It is an experience that without peace and unity, no meaningful development can happen, not only in the country but in the District and Regional level. This explains why the people of Ghana should pat themselves on the back for an election that only ended in reconciliation.

Now that the election is over, the country must put all the politics behind it and focus on the development process of the country in unity here. First, the leadership of the country itself should be seen to be interested in peace and harmony for the development of the country. Selfishness, partisanship, greed and corruption must be minimized if not completely eliminated.

There will be no peace and unity if the political leaders show that they prefer their own welfare to the neglect of the majority of the people who elected them. to work. The current hullaballoo about ex-gratia awards to former Presidents, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries is an example of the culture of politics to come. Voluntary creation of conflict and disharmony among citizens which leads to violence and conflict instead of harmony and peace for the country’s development . . It is heartening to see that HE President JEAMills has made efforts to use the law to review all the stories of ex-gratia gifts. If this is not done, there will be no peace and unity and there will be no national development.

Ghana is not a poor country by nature. It is a place where Ghana is a land that is blessed with all kinds of resources such as gold, diamonds, bauxite, cocoa, timber, arable land, rivers, good rainfall patterns and lots of sunshine. year round. And yet Ghana is at the end with poverty. After 52 years of independence, if the country’s natural resources are well managed and productive, should a Ghanaian child go to bed without eating? After 52 years of independence, should any Ghanaian child be denied a college education? Maybe something is missing!

Besides natural resources, Ghana is equally endowed with human resources. He is blessed with some of the best brains in Africa if not in the entire world. One can refer to the now former UN Secretary-General Busumuru Kofi Annan and others in the international body as a symbol of human resources in the country. These are just a few reasons why Ghana can do better than it has done so far after 52 years of the country in terms of health, political owner and culture.

Now one can predict that a solid foundation has been laid for the trade of the country across the board. Various industries including Agriculture, Education, Health, Transportation, Communications, Business, Commerce, Trade, Foreign Policy, Play and other things are like today like today before independence. For example, the Capitation Grant, the National Health Insurance Scheme and the School Feeding Program have made it possible for some students to go to school and receive at least one meal a day for free. The new government can develop according to what is in place for national development.

The National Health Insurance Scheme has come to life, but there is a lot of room for improvement. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is slowly but steadily taking root in society. Ghana is on the Information Super High Way through the Government of Ghana Portal. Ghana has a full ICT Policy already in place. The National Portal needs to be revamped to make it a real electronic gateway in E-Government.

The previous government started building what are called Community Information Centers (CICs) in all 230 constituencies across the country. This is a practical strategy that ensures that ICTs are brought closer to the rural people who are mostly in the country. He hopes that the new administration will continue with this work and make it better for the development of the country. Again, the discovery of oil in commercial quantities during the celebration of 50 years of Ghana is a great opportunity for this country, just to mention but a few.

On Tuesday, February 17, 2009, a delegation of Norwegian oil experts, led by the country’s Minister for Environment and International Development, Mr Erik Solheim, called on the Ghanaian Vice President, HE John Mahama of Castle Osu, Accra. Among other things, Vice President Mahama, announced that the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has been restructured to modernize it to meet the government’s mission to make Ghana a rich country in the future. the next does not pass. Of course, Ghana can only become a rich country in the future and only if the people of Ghana join together to make peace and harmony as a pillar for National Development.
