Why We Can’t Get Enough American Idol
Now we’re well into the final 12. American Idol 2006 is in full swing, and as Randy Jackson said, “we’ve got a hot dog.”
As my wife and I sat watching it every night, we couldn’t help but be drawn. Of all these interests, I am baffled why?
Every year, it’s the same type, the same motley crue of judges, the same Ryan Seacrest. And the banter between Seacrest and Simon Cowell is predictable; we saw it coming a mile away. Paula Abdul has always been soft-spoken, commenting on the sexuality of men like Ace Young, making us wonder who’s telling the truth – her or Cory Clark. Randy Jackson puts it “it’s aaiight,” or “it’s pitchy in a few places.” Or he shouts out to the “black pound”, asking for their guffales, chortels, and choodles. I’m not sure what Jackson is talking about – next year I need a Jackson language decoder key. And Cowell, well, he’s always honest, sometimes offensive, and uses the word “scary” a lot.
I still ask myself why I – and most every pocket of the American population – turn into shows that bring singers with courage, desire, a bit of talents, and some places and turn them into International Pop Icons?
Well, I’ve thought long and hard about this. And I think it comes down to one thing. Change: We all see a little bit of ourselves or the person we want or think we can have or need to be in one candidate or another. And it gives us the opportunity to share in their dream to become the next American Idol – the next pop icon.
View in different levels.
The first difference, There is an Idol that we can all relate to. We have Ace Young, young, maybe very good-looking to be watched as a talent, maybe better than a 25-year-old actor. It should draw young and middle-aged women. My wife even said, “it looks good.” Not being able to give a conflicting opinion because I would, in fact, be wrong, all I can say is “you know what, you are.”
Next let’s look at Mandisa. Yes, it’s big but the girl can sing. Reminiscent of Aretha Franklin, she has a beautiful smile. We can’t help but be drawn to it.
And Bucky Covington. He’s got that raspy, kinda southern, kinda Texas swagger. There is no other long blonde who wears a cowboy hat, therefore, it is representative of some people.
Katharine McPhee has a beautiful voice and smiles and is very happy; his talent is obvious. Theater geeks love it.
Paris Bennett has so many looks that I question if she is really human. It can be put on the show. I’ve always thought she was cute, but now I think she’s spunky and excited to try to win this.
Taylor Hicks’ dance moves are… well, I’m not sure what they are. He’s like Joe Cocker or Bob Seger on too much caffeine or something. It’s kind of an anomaly, but it’s very popular and has a lot of appeal.
Elliot Yamin is close to his mother. The man wears an insulin pump to prevent diabetes every day. I’m not really a fan, but my heart bleeds for him; I can’t help but respect his wisdom no matter what he calls it. What about Kellie Pickler? What did Simon call him, “the naughty little minx?” And he answered, asking what it was. C’mon, men 16-40 want to explain to him clearly. The cute, ditzy, little blonde has the most young men to watch. Oh, you ask, “Can he sing?” Really, does it matter?
We got rockers, represented by Chris Daughtry. Sure, Simon isn’t crazy about Chris’ performance this week. But the man is itchy, and he pulls out the itch. It’s not all classy, but it’s classic – and it rocks.
Idol gives truth and truth to all of us. The show hosts pop music icons every week. Last year, we had Elton John. Last week, today’s sensation, Shakira and Wyclef Jean. Earlier this year we started with Stevie Wonder, then went to Barry Manilow. Love or hate one of them, they are legends and have influenced R&B, pop, soul, and now provide samples and hooks that keep us jamming on our iPods for days no. Hearing their music takes us back to the time when we first heard them – the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. They create the nostalgia of days and times past and turn us back to the excitement of another time.
American Idol makes us adapt ourselves to the contestant’s experience. We can live their joy of being on top of the world when they hear “you are not below us.” Unfortunately, we share their disappointment when Seacrest says “this is the end of the road for you.”
We talk about them, their voice, race, style, smile, personality, and talent. For a moment in each song, we transform ourselves into the space with them, sharing in the spotlight. And for a few minutes, through the transition, we were the American Idol, the next Pop Icon. All the fear, anxiety, and pain of everyday life are gone, and everything is in our world.
That, my friends, is the secret behind the success of American Idol. It gives us all a chance to escape from our everyday lives, and turn into stars. The American heart can’t resist the opportunity to be a star, an American Icon, if only for a moment.
At the end of a long day, nothing goes wrong.
