Halloween Candy Review: What to Eat When You Just Can’t Say No

‘Tis the season for sweets, treats and big family meals. What begins the cascade of holiday celebrations, but our children love … Halloween! Halloween is one of those holidays that regardless of age I have to admit I look forward to. Really, what’s cooler than free candy?

So, let’s be honest here. I’ve seen a lot of healthy people grab a mini snickers from the office Halloween candy tray. Most of us can do it. I’ll admit it, I’m a health professional and I eat sweets. However, my definition of sweets may be slightly different from the norm. When I eat sweets I try to try to eat those that are in some shape or form have some good service. However, office candy may not contain 70% dark chocolate squares. So, if you know that you will be tempted, what is the “best” option from? Here are some of my go to tips when I go through the dough:

• Big doesn’t always mean less calories. For example, for example Butterfinger. “Big fun” Butterfinger has 100 calories! Compare that to the “big fun” 3 Musketeers which only packs 63 calories.
• Fruity desserts can be deceiving. Although it may be “fat free”, it is often packed with lots of colors and flavors. There is usually no way around this unless you can get your hands on some candy or candy like YummyEarth. In fact, you’d be better off with a “fun” candy bar vs. 5 handfuls of sugar candy. Consider this: Starburst has 204 calories and 4 grams of fat per 10 pieces! AND Starbursts are one of the only fruits that contain fat!
• Simple things are often a good sign. For example the York Peppermint Pattie. One FULL, BIG Pattie is only 140 calories and 2 grams of fat. Compare that to a full size dessert and you usually have Pattie as your winner! When you look at the ingredients in York the list is short. Just like we’ve heard with food, the fewer ingredients you see (and hopefully the words you understand) the better!
• Special versions are usually bigger, heftier versions of the original. Eating Reese’s Pumpkin vs. Reese’s peanut butter cups. The pumpkin pie is 170 calories compared to 105 calories of your standard cup. Does it really need to look like pumpkin to taste good?
• Try the last dessert. A lollipop is a good choice. Low in calories, you can keep the flavor and fun for minutes!
