Practising Techniques For a Musical Instrument

Playing music is a lot of fun, whether it is on your own, with other players duets or in a group such as an orchestra, rock band, flute choir, chamber group. In order for you to do this you must be able to play the pieces. So what should happen?

Practice. This is the art of focus, repetition, play. Practice is comparable to training a successful athlete. The teacher or music teacher explains what the problems are and the actual work is done by you at your training or practice. Here are some tips.

1. Play slowly: This allows you to focus on all areas of the paper and get it right. When you learn a piece of music you go through many steps. Before you get the correct text. The second you get the right sound. Thirdly you add the required music features such as dynamics, ornaments, appropriate speed and other requirements. Take these steps one at a time. If the paper needs to go at a fast pace then you have to do a lot of replays to improve the speed with ease. Often slow, focused practice will help with this.

2. Repeat the difficult sections: This can be two notes, such as a time change for the sound, or two sticks to practice the sound. Then practice a few lines or sentences on both sides of the difficult section to flow through. Expand the number of words that you practice around the difficulty and eventually play at full speed on the difficult part. Sometimes when people practice the difficulty on their own and get it right and then when you put it in context with more, the same mistakes happen again. This is a lot. Just slow down, focus on practice. Practicing the difficult sections on their own helps make the easy sections as easy as possible. Sometimes when there are easy and difficult sections people play at different speeds and then don’t get a sense of what should flow at one even tempo. This is where you play pieces at the speed of the hard sections.

3. Play additional exercises: If there is a problem in one part of the piece then you can do more exercises as far as the piece like rhythm or tone exercise. A music teacher can teach some exercises. Physical exercises can include clapping and counting out loud, slowly. Then play a few times. A metronome can keep you in time, especially if you play a wind meter and can’t count loudly as you play. Tone exercises can include playing for a long time, listening carefully and changing something you are doing if you are not satisfied with the tone. If you’re playing a note progression starting with a note you can play smoothly and move the note to the next note. Try and get the same effect.

4. Repeat: You should repeat your exercises on different days of the week. It is better to do a little practice (less than 5 minutes) and more often than one big practice (30 minutes) one day a week or before the lesson. This is like anything in life, if you do it enough you know it. Draw yourself a loyalty card with the week on the left and the day of the week across the top. Write it down every time you practice. Try and do at least 5 exercises every week.

5. Practice the same as any conversation: The time to practice will vary according to your level. Beginners can start with 5-10 minutes, Intermediates (level 5) should expect to do 30 minutes and Advanced people (level 8 and above) can practice for 2 or 3 hours. Regular training works. Just remember the whole point of learning an instrument is to enjoy it. So remember to play your favorite music for fun. Your practice focus will be separated so you can improve and then play hard for fun.

6. Correct Posture: Make sure that you practice proper posture for your instrument such as wind instruments you will need a straight back ie not slouched and relaxed shoulders in order to breathe properly and create the sounds good. You can sit or stand. It’s a good idea to practice both ways if you can. Just remember if you are aiming to play in a group like an orchestra or chamber group then you will be sitting. If you want to be a solo artist you will stand if the scale allows you too.

7. Using the mirror: Play pieces, play in front of the mirror and see if there is something that needs to be fixed such as the body, holding the instrument.

8. Wear simple clothes

9. An example of a 30 minute practice:

~ keep warm with simple things you like to play

~ 5 minutes tone exercise

~5 minutes of current measurement and operation

~ 5 minutes or more of current research, re-doing some of the same

~ 10 minutes on the paper you are studying with your teacher if you have one.

You can rest in between.

You have read the practice instructions. Follow them, do them and you will reap the rewards. Go out and enjoy your tools and the benefits of PRACTISE.
