Lessons From a 103 Year Old Productivity Technique
Have you ever caught yourself involved productivity envy? Some people achieve a lot, but it seems that no matter how hard you work, your to-do list goes on and on and you don’t feel like you’ve accomplished anything important.
While there are many “developer tools” and hacks that promise instant work at lightning speed; all you need is a piece of paper.
Charles M. Schwab, is the president of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, the largest shipbuilder, the second largest steel producer in America, and one of the richest men in the world.
Schwab is looking for new ways to improve the performance of his company and increase the competitiveness of his competition.
Ivy Lee, a well-known consultant in production and management, marketing strategy, and director in public relations prepared for the meeting with Schwab. (As stated by Charles “Tremendous” Jones in his book “Leadership Is For You”, pp. 42-44. (1968)
Schwab said, “Tell us how to get more done, I will be happy to listen to you. And, if it works, I will pay everything you ask in reason.”
Lee replied, “If that’s what you want, I’ll show you a method that will make your own work, and that of other people using it, at least fifty percent hundred.”
This bold commitment has made the entrepreneur curious.
Lee “sent Schwab a blank note and said,”Write down the most important thing you have to do tomorrow.”
Schwab took about five minutes to do this.
Lee asked Schwab to List them in the order of their importance. (This takes a little more time for Schwab.)
Lee then shared the final steps of this simple method, “First thing in the morning, start working on step 1, and stay with it until it’s done. Then take item number 2 as well. Then Number 3, and so on. .”
“You will have to complete the most important tasks before moving on to the less important ones. If you cannot complete everything you plan for tomorrow with this process, there is no other way you will done. And without this system you will have. take longer to complete what you set out to do, do not take care of things in the judgment of them real value for you and your company. “
Lee encouraged Schwab to do this every day at work. After he had convinced himself of the value of this system, he asked his men to try it.
He closed the meeting by saying, “try it as long as you like, and then send me your check for whatever you think the idea is worth.”
Charles Schwab and his board of directors at Bethlehem Steel used the Ivy Lee Method for manufacturing with great success. Three months later, Schwab sent a check for $25,000 to Ivy Lee. ($25,000 in 1918 is equivalent to $475,318 in 2021.)
Schwab said This lesson is the most valuable thing he has learned in his business career. He later said that this was a plan to take a major role in turning a small steel company into one of the largest producers in the world. “
Ivy Lee’s 4 step approach to achieving high productivity:
1.) At the end of each working day, Write down the most important things you need to accomplish tomorrow. Don’t write too much for the job.
2.) Put the 6 items first in front of them the importance.
3.) When you arrive tomorrow, pay attention to the first job only. Work until the first job is done before moving on to the second job.
4.) Enter the rest of your list in the same way. At the end of the day, move the unfinished items to a new list of six tasks for the next day.
Repeat this process every working day.
Many businesses over the past 103 years have used Ivy Lee’s methods for maximum productivity with great success. It’s all about focusing on “good key management”.
I promise you, this will improve your record of production!
