The Difficulty Of Losing A Loved One

Losing a loved one is like having a rug come from you. I should know because I lost four family members in the span of seven years. The situation never went away. You just learn how to deal with it and move on.

The first time that went was my child who was two years old at that time. I left him with his babysitter and returned home to find that he had fallen into a nearby lake. I wrote the whole story about it at http://www.coping-with-grief.com with sample chapters. You never get over the loss of a loved one. You’re just trying to get on with your life.

The second family loss was my stepfather who, believe it or not, fell in the same lake eleven months after my son’s death. His body was never found and my mother never had any closure because there was no body to bury. In fact, he watched the whole situation unfold before him and was helpless to save him. I’m sure he has a lot of guilt today.

Two years later, my grandmother suddenly became very ill and was rushed to the hospital where she died two days later. The cause of his death was cancer, which was a family secret that I was not privy to until his death. It hurts me because I haven’t seen him in five years and can’t say goodbye. It is also difficult for my mother who is still sad for her husband.

Four years later the accident of my elder sister and my mother’s daughter from a car accident resulted in the death of all of us. We were all disappointed. It seems unreasonable for a family to be able to make a lot of money. My mother had to be put on tranquilizers because it was difficult for her. It was just too much for him to bear. I had to take care of all the funeral arrangements and take care of my sister’s three children who were left behind.

There is no way I can do everything I id without living in the denial of grief. I went through the motions, but I didn’t believe any of it. I kept my thoughts in check because I didn’t want to upset my mother anymore. I also went through the guilt of wanting to be the one who died for my sister. I feel guilty for being the one who is still alive. I was not able to resolve my feelings immediately because I was thinking more about how to comfort my mother. I have had the loss of a child so I know that he has no feelings, but the pain of my sister ignored the pain I have for my son and I can not find the right words to support him.

How do you tell your mother that you are sad that she lost her child who is your sister, but you want her to be yours? It seems selfish to me to think that way, but when you are sad, self-pity is one of the emotions that fall and depression creates negative feelings especially when you have been through go as many as I have.

As I am telling you my story about what happened to me in seven years, it seems unbelievable and I would never think that I would still be fine today, but I am. This means you can get over your grief and your loss. Time is a great healer, but family is the biggest support you can have.

My family and I are close to all the suffering. We realized that our experience would allow us to reach out to others and make a difference in the lives of others who are still grieving or have lost a loved one. Don’t give up hope. Live and you will heal your grief, but remember to stay close to your family along the way.
