Taking the "IRE" Out of Retirement
I admit it. I am a boomer in retirement. After receiving an early retirement application from my employer of 25 years, I took the money and ran. Or, most definitely, walk to the bank, consult my financial advisor and invest in stocks and bonds. I’m too young to get paid, so I’m considering my options. I wonder how many others are in my work? Hence, this article.
Here I am in my fifties and haven’t told the company after work since I was thirteen. Even though I didn’t support myself until I was 22, it was still a long career. The day after I retired from work, he spent some time in the sink. I started the day with the urge to check my email and voicemail, a recent development in my work routine. I won’t miss the meetings, but I will miss my colleagues. I finally have a stress-free space and will enjoy the time to write, paint, learn guitar and travel without limits. My wife still works as a teacher, so we have a lot of time together.
But what to do? How to spend more time to avoid guilt? And, most of all, what will happen in the next twenty or thirty years? My father died at the age of 89, so I decided that I could live for three more years. I need to generate some extra income while waiting to reach 59 1/2 for my retirement and then 62 1/2 for early security. I can do some consulting because I run my own advertising agency and have expertise. I can paint murals and think about that too. I don’t want to work too hard, but obviously I don’t want to reduce a lazy bum either. I have to balance work and play.
So it will be a difficult decision. I spent a few weeks really looking at monster.com for work ideas. But I have a big problem. When I left the company, I was over $50 an hour and most of the jobs were in the $10-$12 hour range. Oops! Well, a former client came to the rescue and offered me a sales job that would allow me to work my own hours and make a few bucks over the next year. So we hit it off and agreed and I sold some weeks. I decided to take advantage of my wife’s teaching time and plan several vacations together. With grown children out of the house, this works perfectly.
It was the first time we were able to enjoy the time as a couple without other work-related problems. In the past, I had to take vacations around sales every year. Now we have more flexibility and it allows us to take advantage of special trips. Luckily I have some savings and money is not a big problem. During the first year of the big “R” we created an idea for a home business and the next year my wife retired. Now we work together to run the site and create a network of people seeking health information and doctors and dentists are referred and rated by experts. monitor patients. It’s fun and helps the 50 communities we serve, across the country. We even donate money to charity in exchange for patient referrals.
So, in summary, how do you get “IRE” out of retirement? Using the acronym, you can start:
- (I) Investing in yourself: take a break from work and do what you have left.
- (R) Relax, rest, relax, regroup, and rethink your lifestyle and current situation.
- (E) Explore your options. There are many options to consider, depending on your needs.
As for me, I’m still surviving the retirement angst, thank you very much. It was challenging and fun. Mostly, it allowed me time with my wife and a whole new job that could lead to happy times. I look forward to the future and all that life has to offer to our senior community. I’m still going to write, paint, do a website business and finally learn to play that darn guitar that happened to be in the corner of the dungeon.
