Things Parents Can Do to Develop Kids’ Motor Skills
As a parent of a young child you may be wondering what you can do to support the development of motor skills. Driving skills are an important building block for many of the academic skills your child will need in school. There are many activities that parents can do with their child to help develop their motor skills well and overall. Many people don’t realize how these skills can affect a child. Improving motor skills allows them to do better in other ways, more academically and physically. Basic driving skills are divided into two groups: fine and full.
Fine motor skills are skills that involve using hands and fingers together with vision (also known as hand-eye coordination). All motor skills are those that involve the use of large muscles. In the early years of child development there are activities for your child that can help them develop and support their motor skills. Here are some things parents can do to help improve driving skills.
– Fine motor skills – These are the skills that allow you to develop the ability to do things like writing and handling small objects. Try these simple things to help your children along the way.
1. Coloring is one of the easiest ways to help your child improve their fine motor skills. The coloring books have different levels from the easiest pictures to the more difficult pictures. You can ask your child to use crayons, markers, colored pencils or even chalk. For some free painting try putting the letters on a small easel, on the wall or even on the door to give your child a new perspective.
2. Art. Try alternating between large, stubby brushes and small, finer brushes. The smaller the brush, the more control the child will need with their hands. Also try to get your kids to do some painting with cotton swabs. This is very effective and allows them to develop their pincer grips that are needed for learning to write. Have your kids try finger painting, stamping and even walk painting for something extra.
3. Puzzles-For children; it will work best to start them with big peg puzzles. These are puzzles that have a little knob out of each puzzle piece. This allows them to gain more control over their finger movements. For starter puzzles you can buy them with very large balls that need to be held fully fisted then you can move on to the challenge that requires thumb and forefinger grip (pincer grip).
– Gross Motor Skills – These are gross motor skills; such as running, jumping and jumping and so on. They need balance and coordination. To help build these try some of these activities-
1. running. Create a game that requires fast movement. This is good for supporting the development of the whole body’s coordination.
2. Climbing. Take them to the park and let them climb all over the jungle gyms. Climbing seems to be something the kids do. You may have seen it when they started climbing on the coffee table at a young age! Each time they try, they will get a little better because they are developing all the important muscles.
3. Hopping. Set up a game of hopscotch. All that hopping about is really about developing some balance.
4. Promote basketball. Kicking, rolling and throwing are some great ways to encourage motor development and you won’t need anything more than a ball and a small room. Small balls require a little more control but you should aim to get a ball that can be carried easily. A very large ball for a young child can become difficult to manage and become very stressful, very quickly.
