Signs That Even YOU Need to Learn Spanish-And Tips to Get You Started!
ATLANTA, GA, February 20, 2006: If you thought learning Spanish was only for high school students or international travelers, think again. Consider these statistics:
o Spanish and English are nearly the most spoken languages in the world. As of 1999, there are 332 million Spanish speakers, compared to 322 million for English. (Ethnologue.com)
o Hispanics are our nation’s largest minority at 39.8 million, an increase of almost 13% since 2000. The Latino population is expected to increase 188 percentto 102.6 million, or about one percent three of the population by 2050. (US Census Bureau 2004)
o The Hispanic population grew faster in Georgia than in any other state in the country from 2000 to 2002, at 17%, with 102 Hispanics moving to Georgia every day. Metro Atlanta experienced the fastest growth in Mexico among the nation’s 20 most populous areas. (US Census Bureau, Sept. 2003).
o In 2004, Georgia was one of the ten states with the largest Hispanic economy ($10.9 billion). (Selig Center for Economic Growth, 2004)
o Atlanta has 21 stations and 9 radio stations that focus on serving Latinos in Georgia. Univision and Georgia TeVe are Spanish-Language television stations that also serve Atlanta. (www.ghcc.org)

“When I first started teaching Spanish over 5 years ago, I mostly worked with Health professionals, vacation planners in Latin America or Spain, and interested students get more help in their classrooms. Today, I work with Directors and Teachers, Writers. Everyone has seen how fast Spanish learning is in Atlanta,” said that Jennifer Casado, owner of CharlarUSA, a Spanish Academy that emphasizes conversation for Spanish in addition to activities that teach students about Latino culture.
If you decide that learning Spanish is for you, here are 6 tips for organizing your plan:
Tip 1: Set realistic goals: Think carefully about the skills you want to achieve in the time you have to learn Spanish. Do you need to say goodbye, or even speak? Or do you just want to be able to call a taxi and order food on your next visit to Mexico? Learning a foreign language will not happen overnight (they call it “foreign” for a reason!) and mastering it will require a long-term commitment, similar to your work.
Tip 2: Think about your education before you invest: Whether you plan to buy a set of CDs, workbooks, or tutorials, do your research! Books and CDs won’t help you learn if you don’t use them.
If you are a “visual” learner, buy the workbook before you invest in the CD. If you have a long trip, buy CDs to listen to while you drive. For more information, contact a teacher or a school that can guarantee small classes and can address your questions.
Tip 3: Start slowly: After deciding on your first idea, try it out: If you decide to study, sign up for one and see if you like it. Maybe you want a less formal or more personal approach. To supplement your classes, you may want to ask your instructor or classmates for recommendations, or borrow CDs, videos, and/or textbooks from your library. local try before you buy.
Tip 4: Put yourself out there! : The main reason for learning a foreign language is communication. Join a Spanish language club or a school like CharlarUSA that organizes activities that you can practice outside of the classroom. If you apply and apply what you’ve learned – even if it’s just at your local Mexican restaurant – you’ll make the learning process very efficient!
Tip No. 5: Keep at it! Learning a foreign language is like a ladder – at times it will not seem like you are improving, and suddenly you will jump to the next level. If you feel like you’re at a standstill, maybe it’s time to adjust your learning strategy (more oral comprehension, less grammar, etc.). Discuss any concerns you have with your coach so that your program can be adjusted.
Tip 6: Finally, have fun! Learning Spanish can open many doors for you, introduce you to other cultures, and also help you better understand your neighbors, co-workers and friends. Make sure you enjoy it and reward yourself for all your hard work!
