Parenting Tips On Sensory Diet For Sensory Integration Disorder
Is your child with autism sensitive to sounds, smells and is a picky eater? Does your child with a disability cause anxiety, when asked to sit for a long time? These are all signs of an integrated mental disorder (SID). This article will discuss healthy eating habits for children with SID.
Sensory Integration Disorder is the inability of the brain to process information correctly through the senses. SID can manifest itself in many ways. A child with SID may become hypersensitive to sounds, smells, and may be picky eaters (dislike the way food is in their mouth ), may not like clothes that look good on their skin. Many children with autism and learning disabilities have problems understanding social interactions.
Children with SID may also have motor skills problems such as; difficulty with fines and general motor skills, difficulty following movements, or problems with balance.
Treatment is usually carried out by an occupational therapist, with experience in treating children with poor coordination. A healthy diet can also be put together, especially for your child. Meals can be used at home and at school.
Eating well means that you include activities, in your child’s day; at home and at school. Every child’s nutritional needs are different, depending on your child’s SI needs. Ask your child’s doctor to help you set up a healthy diet, to meet your child’s special needs.
For example: If your child is not breathing regularly, or maybe he is hitting or pinching, or acting silly, or laughing for no reason, a healthy diet can help. Providing your child with regular activities will help them stay calm and in control more often.
An example of a healthy diet is listed below:
Among the key points in your child’s day:
1. Swing in a special swing or in a playground
2. Challenge games such as tag, or running competitions
3. Jumping jacks, stretching, sitting, balance beam
4. Trampoline, swing wheel, exercise ball
5. Squeezables such as nerf balls, artificial putty and others.
Every half hour if possible; to include the above:
6. Sports smell
7. Brushing or brushing with a toothbrush (Ask the doctor for the type of toothbrush to use, and how to do this procedure), do not include the stomach.
8. Jump rope
Activities you can use at home:
a. Morning: shower, brush teeth, deep breath.
b. After school: Children’s choice (biking, running, skating).
c. Evening: Dinner, shower, deep breath.
Using a healthy diet for a child with SID, can lead to improvements in their behavior and ability to focus. The things listed are easy to do at home and school. You may need to advocate for emotional support for your child, but remember the staff is very specific about how it can help your child.
