Mandy Mac Modern Cloth Nappies
My girl is growing now so she is moving out of diapers and into her potty training pants. For me, it is with some sadness that I will no longer need our lovely Mandy Mac diapers (well at least until baby number two graces us!)
You may wonder why I am writing about modern cloth nappies today since I have already advocated for Natural Baby Hygiene. I still think Natural Baby Hygiene is the way to go, but it also works best if you start from birth. Something I didn’t do because I didn’t find out about it until my daughter was already six months old. We are working well together at Natural Baby Hygiene, which is why he is moving from full-time to part-time potty because he is already using the toilet successfully for most of his eliminations at twelve months. When baby number two graces us, I’ll be using my Mandy Mac diapers while I learn baby’s weaning cues and on and off.
So why do I think Mandy Mac modern cloth diapers are the bomb?
1. The design
They are one size fits all diapers with built in liners to catch solid waste. Made from either hemp/cotton blend or bamboo/cotton blend they fit all sizes of babies from birth to training age conventional Western toilets. The shape is almost identical to that of a disposable diaper making it easy for people to work it out. You put the diaper on, pull the front up over the baby’s crotch and secure the sides with a snappy elastic clip, or with some pins.
Another great thing about the design is that they are not waterproof. Now, you might think that a diaper that needs an additional PUL cover would be more hassle than it’s worth but it’s not. The main idea behind modern cloth diapers is to change them when they are wet and not let your child sit around in his dirty diaper until it is “full” as you would with a disposable. If you use a modern cloth diaper your baby will feel wet and is generally not happy with that feeling. It will let you know that it needs to change and this serves two great purposes. First, a modern cloth diaper baby rarely gets diaper rash. The bottom is kept clean and dry and does not stay in contact with its waste. He might still get the odd teething rash but this has nothing to do with the cleanliness of his nappy. Second, you can train earlier because babies don’t like to feel wet. This helps with Natural Baby Hygiene as well as conventional Western toilet training, as even when you conventionally train a baby it is often recommended that you change to a cloth diaper precisely for this reason.
Also, not using a PUL cover while at home gives the nappy cloth more breathability, and further promotes a hygienic environment for your baby’s bottom.
However, by using a PUL cover on the Mandy Mac diaper, you can go out and about with confidence that your baby’s diaper won’t get full and create a puddle where it sits, until you can get to a changing room . it again PUL is more breathable than a plastic cover.
2. The fabrics
They are made from either a hemp/cotton blend or a bamboo/cotton blend.
Bamboo is soft, delicate and highly absorbent. It is a beautiful fabric to use, and if you have only one child, this is a good option. Being highly absorbent, these diapers may take longer to dry especially if you live in a wet and cold area.
Hemp lasts well and dries faster, but can feel a little itchy at times. This is actually not a problem because the baby’s body does not come into contact with the hemp itself, the baby’s body comes into contact with the lining, so the slightly harder texture of a hemp diaper is not actually a problem In addition, hemp is very durable, so depending on the intended use you might need to use the hemp if you are going to pass them on to the next children.
Mandy Mac has some fantastic night diapers called “Night Violet”. So called because the built in liner is a gorgeous royal purple. They are bamboo which makes them very absorbent, and with twenty two layers of bamboo your baby can go through the night without a diaper change. Best used when the baby is sleeping through the night and does not wake up again for a feed in the night. I have three. One to use, one in the wash and one on the line.
3. Ethics
Mandy Mac modern cloth diapers are not only eco-friendly made in fair trade working environment. Diaper makers receive a fair wage, excellent benefits for themselves and their communities in exchange for their work.
So how many layers of modern fabric would you need to start?
For a newborn, you can expect that, until he settles into a comfortable eating and sleeping routine, you may need about 8 to 10 diapers a day, especially if he is a breastfed baby. Don’t worry, it doesn’t take long for a newborn to settle into a routine that he is comfortable with and you can start reducing the number of diapers needed because you can predict how often he will need to be changed.
For a baby 3 – 6 months you may need about six to eight a day.
For a baby 6 – 18 months you may need about six a day plus a Purple Night for use at night.
I bought 14 Mandy Macs, 3 Snappies, 3 PUL Covers and 3 Purple Nights. I also use a couple of prefold cotton diapers if it has been raining and the wash has not dried in time! You can use a clothes dryer for your modern cloth nappies, I simply choose not for environmental reasons.
Where did I buy them?
You can get them from Mandy Mac herself but I bought mine from a lovely fair trade baby shop in Canberra called Brindabella Baby. Now, I have no monetary affiliation with Brindabella Baby, I just think that a trade fair focused baby shop is a jolly good idea and should be encouraged. At the moment, they have a Mandy Mac Hemp six pack for a very reasonable price and they estimate that you could save thousands of dollars by choosing modern fabric layers over disposables for life. They also offer a 9 month layby so you can pay your investment in installments while you are pregnant.
So, Mandy Mac, they are mine and my babies. What will you choose for you?
